How do YOU play this shot? ... part 3
« on: July 12, 2004, 11:40:04 AM »
Okay for the 3rd installment...

I've recently been looking for a ball to use on a SCREAMING backend shot, and in the Brunswick forum, I've been discussing different balls to get for this shot... when I thought of something: There's 2 ways to play this shot...

Keep in mind that this is a FRESH shot with head oil, midlane oil, and stripped clean strong backends... the oil is shorter than usual.

1.) Stay in your comfort zone and use a weak ball/weak drilling and play the lanes the way you normally would (as if there was more oil out there and you were using your regular ball)?

2.) Move in deeper and use a stronger backending ball?

Which do you prefer to do?

I would go with no brackets on this one. if you try playing deep with a skid/flip  or aggressive ball and ease up on the speed or tug the ball you will lose all control and I guarantee you'll have some wicked leaves. When you have flying backends your thought process should be about control and getting to the pocket. Now if you have excellent speed control and accuracy, by all means play deep and use the entry angle to your advantage. Otherwise, I prefer to shoot at a ten or four pin instead of a 2-4-8-10, a bucket, or a greek church.

I'll either stand in my comfort zone and start out with my Teal Rhino drilled 4x4 or my Monster Slay/R drilled 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 witsanded at 1200 to tame down the backend.  When that starts going high or not carrying I get deeper with something that can give me more entry angle like a Blazing Inferno.
