How do you react under pressure?
« on: March 09, 2010, 03:06:56 AM »

Do you show heart, have guts, show character, and you always go for it.You bring it and are not
afraid to let the ball go in key moments. You don't care if everyone likes you or not.You want
to the person the can get the job done when needed.

                                                           OR

Are you the type of person who cares if the other bowlers like you.You are afraid of failure and rejection. You get upset at yourself when you don't perform as well as you wanted and can't
just let it go.Do you over think everything.

What type are you and what makes you this way.Be honest we are not all perfect.

To me, how you react to pressure is directly related to how confident you are in your skill set. When I played baseball, I got anxious and excited, but I was never nervous because I never stepped in the box questioning my ability to hit the ball hard. I never got in there believing that the pitcher was better than I was.

On the lanes, I have always had some doubts about my skills. When I'm in the typical league environment, a place where I've had a decent amount of success, I feel very confident in my ability to throw a big game, big strike, whatever. However, when you get me out of that comfort zone, in Sport leagues or in high-level tournaments, a place where I haven't had much success, I am quick to doubt myself. Obviously, that doesn't lead to very good results.

I think there are many aspects of confidence, but it comes down to how much you believe in yourself and your skills. If you believe your skills are sound, "big situations" won't tend to bother you as much because you know in your heart you've got what it takes to succeed. If you're not quite sure you're good enough, you're going to struggle, no question about it.

I'm confident 100% of the time, even when struggling...  I mean even if i am having the worse game of my life, and we need a strike in the 10th..  I want to be the guy to get it...

Same goes when I play softball tournaments, when the game is on the line, I want to be the guy at the plate.

I generally fold like a cheap suit.

Had a front 9 Saturday, first ball in the 10th, through the nose for a 7-10 split to finish with a 266. Typical for me.

Im one of the strange ones.  If i need to strike to win, with everyone watching....no problem, ill be in the hole.

Now, if i need to strike for a score, 300/800/high series type stuff, i get jittery, my hands get really cold & i tend to get fast with my feet.

It takes a LOT of thought to keep it together when trying to shoot a score, but if its for the win, it doesnt get to me at all, i just do what im there to do.

gotta come through in the clutch you want the game to fall on your shoulders.  That is what you have to have in your mind going in as an anchor.  It is the same reaction i had in base ball as a closer or reliever

I think this sums it up well! Though I didn't play baseball, when I played basketball, I always figured, "gimme the dam ball" at the end of games, and especially when it came to the last shot being taken!

This is the same attitude I use now with bowling!

Whenever the game is on the line and I'm the last one up, I give it 100% and make sure that the job is done. I make the bowlers realize why they should fear me in the 9th and 10th frame I'm the show-stopper. There's always going to be a hint of doubt like "what if I don't strike out" or "I can't pick that spare up, been struggling all night". But I try to down that all out and just go out there, do my thing and move on.

Gentlemen--this all sounds very good.  However, this is not what research
bears out.  At some point in the process, social presence will most likely take
over(the consequences of the situation will overtake the ability to perform).
Almost everyone has their limit.

I'm that calm guy that doesn't show much, i'm also not at a level where i'm the best in my league or let alone my team, i'm a major work in progress but hold my own. I don't mind what others think of me and I don't mind pressure, I'm quietly confident but can't say i'm always the one that wants the final spot in the lineup though when Its my spot or turn I do my best to step up.

I have experienced similar results to "Kinalyx" (Shawn).

If I'm in the anchor spot and we need X number of pins to win, I am very confident and come through more often than not. But if I've got a nice string going, and become aware that I have a chance for a 300 game or 700 series or just a very good game or series, I am not quite as reliable (never HAVE had a 300 yet.... two 298's about 18 months ago and a 299 last November).

Maybe the next time I'm in that situation I should pretend that the outcome WILL have a direct impact on the team's fortunes? It might actually settle me down or distract me in a positive way.

I'm the 2nd person. I get really nervous in important situations such as finishing out a high game/series or needing to get x number of pins in the 10th. I also tend to hang onto bad shots and let it effect me for the next few shots. I'm afraid of failure and rejection, but I don't really care what other bowlers (aside from my teammates) think about me.
