Losing my interest in bowling....
« on: September 15, 2012, 10:52:25 PM »
For the past several years I have looked forward to the start of bowling season, now after injuring a shoulder this summer and coming back after the first two weeks of season, I am considering dropping out of league, just don't have the same desire to bowl.   Anyone else go through this?

I did when I was younger.  I'm not sure what it was, but I had lost interest and gave it up for 10 years.  Then, I walked into a house for a work function once and something gave me that spark to want to bowl again.  This year is my 2nd season back in leagues after taking the long layoff and my desire to bowl is as strong or is stronger than when I was younger.

I think what brought me back was that I missed competing against different teams and players on a weekly basis.  Also, I always enjoyed the sport when I was younger, and just went through a stretch where I wanted nothing to do with it.  Now that I'm back, and part of a good 5 man team that makes it really enjoyable, I don't plan on stopping for a long time.

Your team and the league can have a lot to do with it as well. To me if you have a great team around you it makes it a lot more fun.

Years ago all I thought about was bowling. We moved from my hometown 5 years ago. Bowled one season in that town. I just did not have fun bowling and I stopped. I have not missed the hassle of rushing home from work to eat, clean up, grab bowling equipment and rush to the bowling center. I do miss the social interaction of bowling. I also have my kids involved in bowling now as well. So there is where my attention is at. Working with them is great and refocuses my attention. We just moved back to my hometown and many people want me to bowl with them. I agreed to sub with some guys I use to bowl with. Just to get out and socialize with people. Waiting to see if I actually have to sub.

ask to be signed up as an automatic replacement sub so that they will call you 1st!

A while back I gave it up for quite a few years, like you I lost interest. I had other things I wanted to do, so I had went and did them. Honestly, I don't think I missed anything. When I cam back I ended up getting back with my old team on the same old league, and I still bowl there to this day.

If you are not in to it then asked to be dropped down to a sub and ask one of the subs to bowl full time, or something. There is no shame in not wanting to bowl, although some make it out to be the end of the world. You definitely are not doing the team any justice if you do not have your all to give.

it does happen... i had that happen a few years ago, had a really good season in 2003-04, and went into the following season thinking i was going to kill it...

And i did just the opposite lol, my fought tight muscles in my back the whole winter and couldnt bowl worth a damn...  And then took a couple of years off..

When I came back i felt good and eager to bowl again...

Happened to me a couple of years ago.  Bone on Bone Arthirtis in both knees.  Made it painful to stand, bend, walk... everything you need to bowl.  Almost "retired".  You know the old saying, "if it hurts to do that, don't do that"  My "to that" was bowling.  Doctors came up with an injection that I could take and it helped my knees significantly.  Now I can walk better and have practically no pain.  Found my old fire and I am back better than ever.

3 nights a week and tournaments almost every weekend for me last year...got burned out by end of March....took the entire summer off.  Back as a roster member of two leagues but I have only bowled once so far as I am focusing on tournaments and practice only this year....and not too many tournaments....just 2-3 a month.  Its more than enough for me to enjoy the sport and not get burned out by the end of the season.

Some of the other posts speak some truth...might try a new house, a new league night or a new team.  Could make all the difference in the world.

I played poker for a living for a year and a half after I graduated college, during which time I found it necessary to leave bowling as a hobby due to burnout....at the time it was just where I wanted to focus my energy.

I think in the end the 2 years off did wonders for my game, especially mentally.  My first game of practice after a 2 year layoff was 260+.

However, I will say that after that couple years I did miss bowling.  On Wednesday nights it's a bit more of a competive environment.  I bowl with a local hall of famer in a league with plenty of 220+ averages.  On Thursday's it's a family team (and friends of our family that essentially are family) so it's nice to see them at least once a week.

I would suggest taking a season off when the opportunity is available.  Then re-assess every year.

I've had an awful start to this season, so maybe I should re-retire..... :P

I was burnt out when my daughter was being born, so after she was born, I bowled maybe 1 or 2 times every 3 months. That lasted for 3 years, until this summer, when I bowled a Kegel sport shot league. I loved it, and I had that fire back.

Take some time off. Miss it.

I changed my career path in August of this year, and when I finish my training,I will be working some hours that will interfeer with league times and have decided to take a sabbatical. Now with that being said I have been able to sub a few times on Wed/Fri nights, and really have not been to enthusiastic about bowling. And have been struggling too. I actually am glad I will not be bowling full time this year.

Thanks for all of the replies, I am definitely going to stay cut back on my bowling, in the past I would bowl at 12-18 games/weeks this year I will look at moving back to sub status in both of the leagues I have been bowling in.  Some extra time away will help my shoulder to rehab and hopefully next year I will feel a little more excited about bowling.
