I played poker for a living for a year and a half after I graduated college, during which time I found it necessary to leave bowling as a hobby due to burnout....at the time it was just where I wanted to focus my energy.
I think in the end the 2 years off did wonders for my game, especially mentally. My first game of practice after a 2 year layoff was 260+.
However, I will say that after that couple years I did miss bowling. On Wednesday nights it's a bit more of a competive environment. I bowl with a local hall of famer in a league with plenty of 220+ averages. On Thursday's it's a family team (and friends of our family that essentially are family) so it's nice to see them at least once a week.
I would suggest taking a season off when the opportunity is available. Then re-assess every year.
I've had an awful start to this season, so maybe I should re-retire.....
