How do you remove grips?
« on: August 03, 2004, 09:23:54 PM »
Ok, this is a question for anyone who knows how to do this. I have been playin around with switching grips out of old balls that fit better, into new ones. How do I get the grips out without destroying them? I dont have one of those grip remover things that you just push in, so how do I go about it without ruining the grip?

Kid -- The best way is to use the tool, and even then I can't always get them out without damaging them.  Without the tool, you'll need some type of thin, flexible material (metal or hard plastic) to slip in between the hole and the grip, then rotate around to separate the two.  I doubt that a screwdriver or knife will work.  Maybe something like a sparkplug feeler gage, but the thin ones are sharp so don't cut your hand.  --  JohnP

We primarily use a small blade pocket knife. If you are careful (and not too much glue was used) you can get the insert out with only cutting a little away.

I’ve seen some use a real small screwdriver as well. The ones that do this all the time end up bending the shank of the driver some so it fits the curve of the hole and they can just run it around the edge.

We only tack the insert in 3 places (each side and the front) with the glue so there is room for shims and they are easier to remove.

Yea I dont have the tool like you said tenpin, so Im trying to find alternative ways. Maybe I can find a thin piece of like aluminum and bend it to the shape of the hole. I'll keep experimenting I suppose.

If you don't have a ton of super glue in them you can remove them pretty easy with a flat small flat tip screwdriver. That is what i use in my shop. I can use grips over and over again. But then again it took alot of years and alot of removing grips to get good. if you take your time you can also do this with out destroying them.

I use an Xacto knife.  Takes a little practice, like getuaload says, but you can cut cleanly and closely enough to save the insert practically every time.  In a pinch, I also use a flat-tip screwdriver like getuaload does.  Handy as a tape inserting/removing tool as well.

I glue all of my grips on two sides only and in a rare occassion three sides. I glue them approx. 1/2" down from the top with the smallest drop of glue I can make. I use one of those advertisement screwdrivers with the end of blade not being much over 1/8" or so. I pull the grip away from edge of ball and scrape  where grip is glued. I am able to reuse the grips over and over.

That is exactly what I do.
I or my driller only glue the left and the right side, with barely a drop of glue on each side. To remove them, use a 1/8" wide flat blade screwdriver. Start in the back or the front where there's no glue, pull it aside with your fingertip and work the blade in there, gently prying the soft vinyl/rubber away from the hole. It's very easy; be careful, take your time and they come
 off very easily.

Some tiny bits of vinyl/rubber will still stick; but they are usually very tiny pieces. 19/20 or more inserts are reusable.

Same here.  The key is to use as little glue as you possibly can.  I start with a drop on each side, and then perhaps a small drop in front if there's still too much play in the insert.

When I work in the shop I do the exact thing as charlest does, it works every effectively and when you have a little bit of the grip left on the ball (which you most likely do have left) you can take some sort of knife or bevel knife and scrape it out and reuse it.

The best thing to use in grips is pliobond in my opinion.  Only use the pliobond from the on the bottom 3/4 of the grip then you can easily take a pair of needlenose pliers, open them up, put it on each side of the grip, squeeze the grip with the pliers, twist and pull up and out, works perfect everytime.

I SECOND the PLIOBOND as the glue to USE.  EASY to REMOVE.
