How do you see a competitor?
« on: September 15, 2004, 01:07:35 AM »
To be seen as competitive do you have to be in your face aggressive.

I have seen many a good bowler in my years. The guy’s who have been the most fierce competitors are not the ones with the histrionics after carrying a strike, yelling, high fiveing, in your face bowlers. I always feel I can beat those guys and if they get one bad break they are done.

But the guy who exudes quiet confidence and you can tell they are grinding as hard as they can on every shot. They might have a slight fist pump or slap off a big strike but it simply shows a little of their fire for the match at hand.

KSUCAT is a good example, he is as nice a guy as you could know and is not demonstrative on the approach or the settee. But he has the heart of an assassin during a match.

I tend now to ignore the other guys.  May watch their shot.  Most of the time I'm zoning myself. Could careless what they do.  If they start to trash talk and play games I'm not impressed.  I've bowled with and against some of the best bowlers in the world.   Trying to intimidate me doesn't work.

Anybody that is bowling on the lane with me is a COMPETITOR! I may beat them every game or the may whip me  so that I go home talking to myself .. but my thought every time some one bowls with me is to BEAT THEM! Problem is .. I SELDOM DO and have a lot of fun ANY WAY!

I dont pay attention to any of the bowlers or what they are doing. It seems to me that if I play the lane and not the person, I will beat my opponent more times than not.

The quiet people scare me.  From what I've seen if things go wrong for the in-your-face type they fade rapidly.  For me, if things are going well I'm quiet because I'm trying to stay "in the zone" and concentrate on repeating what I'm doing well.  If things are going badly I'm quiet, trying to figure out what to do next.  The quite guy never let's you know how it's going for him.  The noisy one does.

The only two competitors I concern myself with are the lanes and me.  Those, ultimately, are the only things that are in my control.  Throw a good shot, each and every time, and the rest will take care of itself.  Sure, I could give some cheesy primal scream every time that I throw a good shot.  However, don't we openly mock how foolish these dumbbells look when they're bowling and avoid them like the plague afterwards?  Besides, would you be worried about a guy/gal that was making a fool of themselves with some "Ickey shuffle" lookin' ceremony or someone that has failed to miss the pocket for 20 minutes?
