THUMB PITCHES
« on: August 11, 2014, 08:54:12 AM »
Which would you suggest for an span that is 4 7/8 and 5 at the moment I am using 5/16 rev and 1/16 palm in one ball and  0/0 in an different ball I like my rotation a little better with the 5/16 but have a slight squeeze all suggestions are welcome.

I don't see anything alarming about that fit.  I'm a big supporter of as little reverse pitch as possible, that nearly eliminates any need or instinct to grip, but you can also go too far the other direction.  It really depends on your hand, whether or not you're double jointed, dry skin or moist skin, etc.  I'm willing to bet that the reason you like your rotation better with the 5/16 rev, despite the slight squeeze is that once upon a time you were fit poorly with excess reverse in the thumb and developed a habit of throwing the ball with your whole hand.  When most people grip, they grip through the entire swing and through the release.  The gripping becomes part of how you throw the ball, and instead of letting the ball naturally rotate as it's coming off your hand, people will rotate the ball themselves.  You're most likely more used to doing the rotating yourself.  Some things should be fixed, and some should be worked with.  As long as your release is clean and the slight squeeze isn't hindering or negatively affecting your shot or causing fit issues, I see no reason to make any drastic changes.  In this case, I would just recommend going with what is the most comfortable for you.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Just finished bowling three games with each balls and it felt like with 0/0 I start releasing my thumb and fingers at the same time with the 5/16 once I relaxed my hand and slowed down everything seemed to fall in place.

Yeah I think 0 is a bit extreme for that long of a span.

Maybe you can experiment with a pitch in between.  I have a similar span and I have 3 different switch grips one at 1/4 reverse, one at 3/16 reverse, and one at 1/8 reverse.  I feel more grip pressure with the 1/4 and have to be extremely relaxed with the 1/8, but the 3/16 is perfect.

First of all it is incredibly to make a legitimate evaluation of this post as it is quite vague...secondly that is a huge difference between the angles of your comparing thumb holes
Everyone squeezes it is just a matter of how much, when and where...too many times a bowler grips, hangs up and thus next shot 'tries' to relax and release it 'earlier' and drops it...next shot, guess what they grip it and hang up...
Too many things going on here to make a true recommendation...

Lateral has a huge effect on the reverse angle...you need more evaluation than merely throwing some angles in there hoping one sticks,...how do you know your span is correct? Again too many variables to simply stick an angle, chosen on line, in there...

Thumb pitches are so individual.  A lot depends on your finger pitches.  If you go away with the fingers, some people can get away with 0 or even forward pitch over 4 3/4 inches

It has to do with what a persons hand dictates not what somebody wrote

No one can be fitted online.

You need to see someone actually throwing a ball. That is why we used a fitting ball and had them throw it to us in the air.

Who knows if the span is correct?

Charts at best give a starting point nothing more.

I agree with one of the previous responses in that thumb pitches are so individual. Personally, I have a 5 5/8 span (which I 'relax' it at 5 9/16) and I need reverse pitch. I've used as much as 5/8'' reverse and as little as 3/8'' reverse, which I'm using now. (Fortunately, I've not noticed any significant difference in any of the equipment that I use with 3/8" reverse or still use with 5/8" reverse.)

I would suggest that you allow the person whom you trust to drill your bowling balls watch you bowl a few shots and then both of you come up with a plan that works best for you.
Ball speed avg. (18.25 mph)
Rev rate avg. (400-428 rpm)

Your span is pretty much identical to mine, MF=4-15/16", RF=5", I use 1/4 reverse and 1/8 under and have no issues with my release or abnormal callus formation.

Just got an copy of my drill sheet that Ron Williams made on me it was 5/16 rev 1/16 palm also found an copy from national where brunswick rep re-measured me he showed 1/4 rev 0 lateral the gripping of the ball just maybe from bad habits.

Even if your pitches are correct, your thumb shrinking can cause problems.
