How does everyone determine their Speed/Revs
« on: June 20, 2003, 01:55:48 AM »
Just wondering how everyone comes up with their Speed and Rev rates. I know some people use the Quibica for speed but how do you determine your rev rate? I see some people on here saying they throw 18-20 mph and rev 450-500rpm...I find that very hard to believe. I throw the ball pretty hard and have a high rev rate. There are very few people in my area who can throw like this but it seems like everyone on this board says they throw like that.  I would be embarrassed if I met up with someone on BR and bowled nothing like I said...Anybody want to tell the truth about how they actually throw the ball?

is that 19.1 at the pins or off the hand? Are you a down and in player or do you swing it?

For me it's just a wild-ass guess.  Never been hooked up to a computer to figure it out exactly, but from watching other people at various houses and locations, I have determined - from my own observations - that I have a somewhat average ball speed and above average rev rate.

Bob,

If the Quibica is 1-2 mph slow, I don't want to know how fast it is really going. I normally average around 19 mph on the Quibica. At our end of season fun tourney, during low ball, I got into a contest with some of my teammates on who could throw the fastest. Using my spare ball I was able to hit 23.5mph. Nobody else even broke 21, and I am a tall skinny guy. As for my revs I probably have more than I think but I don't hook the lane unless I slow down or I am on dry conditions.

Qubica, as far as I know, is a lot slower than 1-2 mph lesss than what it actually is because it measures at the rear, about 10 ft, more or less, from the pin deck. The bigger your hook, the bigger the difference from the release point to the back end.

CATS measures all along the lane from the foul line at 10-12 ft intervals, I believe. Most references for a person's ball speed are at the 10 foot or the arrows (14 ft) mark; so, most people's speed at that point is good deal faster than what Qubica measures.

My speed was measured by whatever system was used at a house I bowled at. Don't know if it was Qubica or if there are other systems in use.

As for the rev rate i didn't list a number since I've never had it measured properly, I simply went on what my proshop person told me and comparing to other people I bowl with.

Agree that the Qubica does not seem accurate and will vary greatly by where you set the ball down on the lane.  By the Seconds/40.91 method,  I usually come in between 14 and 16mph, which is fairly slow, but on Qubica I was registering in the 12 mph range.
