Video of my Brother in Law
« on: January 05, 2007, 11:23:13 AM »
I thought maybe you guys would have some things I could try telling him.  He used to average in the mid 190s two years ago, now he's around 155.  He's been that way for a year and a half, and I could use advice to give him.  I think he has a myriad of problems, namely timing, but I don't really know.

Mr. Lebowski, this is Bill Salnicker with the Southern Cal Bowling League, and I just got a, an informal report, that a member of your team, uh, Walter Sobchak, drew a firearm during league play. If this is true of course, it contravenes a number of the league's by-laws, and article 27 of the league...

the only thing i notice is the elbow is bent throughout the whole swing and he is hesitating at the bottom of his swing hard to get consistant when the elbow is bent at bottom of the swing

i dont think its really that bad, what i say is that after he releases the ball, he has something weird going on on his shoulders, as if hes trying to put lot more on the ball. and he has a crazy drifting to the right, i think as much as 7-10 boards, after the drifting he loses balance on the sliding feet so the release is not constant (i wouldnt really believe that with the form he has he cant average more than 160)

im just guessing on this one, but did he have a bad experience with bowling? because he looks like hes trying to be very careful in the approach, as he had a bad injury somewhere.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one

He appears to be lifting out of the ball sideways?, rather than following the ball with his hand. His whole shot stops at the foul line and although you can't see it from the video i have to believe that his hand doesn't actually get much beyond his ankle. Needs to work on a follow through that continues toward his mark. Just my 2 cents...
Hope it helps, I know how hard it can be to try and help a stubborn bowler as my sister has never heard a suggestion she likes.

I should add that he's about 5'8", and he stands on the extreme back edge of the approach, and only takes four steps.  His fourth step is almost a leap.

His timing is late most likely due to his excess foot speed.
Swing is extremely controlled and muscled and you can tell there is a high degree of tension in his hand at release.
The bent elbow definitely needs to be fixed as it really hurts his swing plane and causes him to push the ball instead of swing it.

What I would have him try:

I would have him move forward on the approach 1 step, this should reduce his foot speed giving him more time to wait on the ball instead being forced to have the ball play catch up.

I would also have him do what Ron C. calls going for a walk.
What this mean is have him start at the back of the approach and walk toward the foul line at a leisurely pace and start the swing when he feels that it is the appropriate time. This will do a couple of things: It will help to teach his brain that the legs and arms can move independently while swinging a bowling ball. It can also help to remove the bad muscle memory that has been ingrained into his approach.

I would try and get him to start his push away quicker since he is about a half step late when he starts it unless the above helped with his timing.

I would try and convince him to get the feeling that he is trying to through the ball at 75 speed. This should relax his swing and reduce the tension that he has at the bottom of the swing. With the more free and fluid swing his speed will actually increase and a free swing is a straight swing

This may be a stupid thing to say, but when was the last time he bought a new ball? I was in the 190's back in Maine. When we moved to Florida, I was shooting 170 with the same equipment. Talked to a Pro-Shop and after looking at my ball, they said that it was DEAD. Bought some new equipment and I am back in the 190's.

If it is old, he might be trying to adjust for it and that is where you see the problems in timing and such. These are just my thoughts, I hope that they help...

T.J.

BOWLING IS FUN NO MATTER WHAT YOU SCORE. BUT A 300 IS ALWAYS NICE.

STRIKE ZONE, ONSLAUGHT & PYRO. STAND 22 AND THROW 10 OUT TO 5 AND CRUSH THE POCKET. AT LEAST THAT IS THE PLAN OF THE NIGHT...

GOOD LUCK AND GOOD BOWLING!!!

He his not taking his time in moving the ball togeter with his right leg. Not to rush towards the foul line with a long and stretch slide. Which gives him a unbalanced final release. Let him have a 5 step aproach in which he takes a short sliding step with his left leg without moving the ball. Then when he moves his right leg is when he starts moving or pushing forward the bowling ball towards his target. He should create a cadence for his release, have a moderate control slide that he can stick before the foul line for a strong release of the bowling ball. He has to have patience and control on the aproach. He does not need to run down the aproach.
