Title: How dry is dry?
Post by: mumzie on June 12, 2004, 09:49:11 AM: I've noticed that definitions of lane conditions seem to be somewhat subjective - I'm curious...

When you say the lanes are "dry", what do you mean?

Do you mean that your hook monster goes left off your hand, because the heads are a little dry?

Or do you mean that the track is burnt out, so you have to move a few boards left to find oil?

Or do you mean that you're lofting the gutter cap and playing 7th arrow???

I ran into a condition a couple of months ago where the heads were so toasty that no reactive or urethane ball I owned would get through the heads with enough energy to hit the pocket and carry out the 5-7. When I left a 5-7-10, I gave up, and went out to the car and got the XXXL. Paradise!!

Post by: laufaye on June 13, 2004, 01:22:52 AM: Its hard to define whats dry, coz its all depends on where the player play and how they play and what kind of equipment they use, so basically this term can be misused "DRY".

I will say to be fair is when a bowler using a so-called "dry lane balls" in the market and moving to an area that the bowler cannot move anymore and still cant get throuth the mid-lane, then its DRY, to that particular person atleast.

Same thing as some cranker can make anything hook while some bowler need some relatively agressive ball.

Just some thoughts.....

After you finish bowling you want to collapse because you are so tired of throwing the ball as hard as you can to try to hit pocket, beacuse just 1 time early in your set you actually hit pocket for a strike, and you think that no matter what you can still hit pocket. That's dry in my opinoin. I am a tweener, with an average speed of 17mph, and have a Tornado drilled for dry, & I get aggreviated when the lanes are so dry that standing on the ball return & the ball still dives past the head pin, that's dry,to me.

I am currently going to try to sand my Eraser, and then polish the ever living pi*s out of it to try to make it go as long as possible. I hope this works.

Post by: MSC2471 on June 14, 2004, 02:13:04 AM: I guess dry conditions to me would mean I can't use any resin or urethane equipment as they hook from one side to the other too quickly, and that even plastic is having a hard time staying on my side of the lane. I've hit a couple of tournaments like this- especially if they don't reoil by the 4th or 5th shift of the day.

I try to speak in relative terms with people I have a common base with. I will say to my teammates that the lanes are drier/slicker tonight that last week or that they are drier/slicker than our normal house shot.

That being said dry for me is when using my least aggressive equipment I cannot find an area on the lane that allows me to project my ball to a desired breakpoint.

If there is not a rooster tail of oil being flung off of my ball as it spins down the lane, then it's too dry. Always too dry for me, obviously.
