How early is too early?
« on: December 05, 2008, 03:53:25 AM »
My daughter is 3 1/2" and I'm thinking of getting her a hello kitty ball for christmas.  Is she too young to get a ball drilled to fit her hand?  This may be a dumb question but I just wanted some opinions.

My nephew is about the same age, and I'm thinking of waiting until he is about 5 or 6 to get him into bowling.

I have twin daugthers and when one of them was about 3 I took them to bowl at Camelot Lanes in Youngstown, while I was getting a ball drilled. ....anyway, they have their 6 pound balls drilled with 5 holes and she was able to bowl with one hand.

Make sure it's something your child wants to do before you do it.  I knew too many kids growing up who took <insert activity here> lessons and rehearsals and they did not care a lick about it.  They were just afraid of disappointing their parents.

I have a 4 year old son who is getting a T Zone for christmas. It all depends on what YOU want to do and how THEY can bowl with it. The 6 pound house balls here have 5 finger holes helps out a lot.

She's been asking for the hello kitty ball every time we go to the bowling alley.  I'm not really going to give her "lessons" yet.  I just want to have another activity to do with my daughter....

If she is asking for it then get it for her. There is an obvious intrerest there. My son looked at the Brunswick magazine with me three times and all three times picked out the same T Zone. Have fun with her.

We bought our son a ball when he was 3.  He rolled it for a few months without holes, just "grannying" down the lane.  After he could pick up the ball and easily carry it, I drilled it for him.  He is almost 5 now and bowls league in the bantam division, carrying a 65 avg and two handing it....lol

Personally I would not get it drilled at this time.  I would let her roll it 2 handed to begin with.  Very few of the 3 1/2 - 5 year olds I have seen can really handle 1 handed bowling.  They just don't have the strength and coordination yet.

Also at that age they will out grow the span quickly.  The rule of thumb is when they change shoe size you should check hand span.

I have 2 daughters, and neither could throw a 6 pound ball with one hand until they were about 6.  I wouldn't drill it until you're sure she's strong enough.  Let her roll it granny style with 2 hands until then.

I agree with not drilling it yet.  And just let her have fun.  Use the bumpers and brag on her anytime she knocks some pins down.  This will be some great father-daughter bonding time.  --  JohnP

My son has been bowling 2 1/2 years he is 5 years old, now he has a fully plugged 8 lber he wings down the lane with bumpers up.

At 2 1/2 he had to use a rack but since then has graduated to bumpers the last year, he gets lucky and scores over 120 sometimes.

If they can lift the ball it is time to start, next season will be his first juniors year.

I had my son bowling around the age of 3, but even when he got older....5 or 6, he was throwing the ball 2 handed standing at the line.  I thought this to be easiest and figured it would allow him to progress more naturally into bowling.

At 3, I didn't want him dropping a ball on his feet.
