How fast does your league shot transition?
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:26:00 AM »
I've noticed lately that people seem to post more about wanting or needing a ball for a specific timeframe in league, whether it be the first or second half of the night.  Does your league shot change that fast that you need to actively search for a new ball to keep in play as nothing else works?

I bowl in a league with 10 guys per pair yet I find myself rarely having to change balls during league play.  If the lanes dry up a bit I move in as the lanes dictate and as carrydown sets in I move back to adjust.

I'm sure some older houses see some goofy breakdown as the heads dissappear, but do the majority of bowlers really need to change balls in a 3 game set on a THS?

My fall league doesn't transition much, epsecially on the left side. I usually make a small board and target adjustment. The right side doesn't seem to move much either with seven righties normally on my pair.

This past Monday the shot went south for everyone in the third frame of the second game. We shot 864 (4 man) the first game and barely broke 750 the last two games. Both teams struggled simultaneously.

I see major changes during the begining of the 2nd game every week.  heads tend to dry up and I need to go to a longer ball.

So without asking for balls for certain times during league play, then every now and then it would be acceptable to suffer, scoring-wise, to only need one ball?

Some nights it transitions quickly, some nights hardly any.  It depends strongly on who's bowling on my pair.  I know what effects my team will have on the lane and it generally doesn't change much from week to week.  The other team, though, does change.  Some weeks it's the drunks with the plastic balls creating 15' of carrydown by the end of the second game.  Some weeks it's the geezers and their 80-grit sponges drying up the breakpoint by the fourth minute of practice.  Some weeks it's the spray-and-pray hotshots who destroy the pattern in 10-board chunks.

I've bowled in different leagues in the same house that transitioned differently even.

I bowled in a 5-man team league on a team full of crankers and spray-and-pray guys, with me being the lone stroker/tweener on the team.  So, when the heads got absolutely destroyed by them to the left, when I needed to start moving left to adjust for my line drying out, I hit a ton of dry and had to make huge moves and usually ended up lost with dry heads and lots of carrydown on the backend.

I bowled in a second-shift 4-person league right after a 5-person mixed league on wood lanes.  Needless to say, by the end of our third game, there would be nothing resembling head oil left outside of the 4th arrow.  I had to make some huge moves in that league as well.

4 person mixed league on Saturday nights, after the kiddies bowled on the lanes in the morning and open bowling after that.  The lanes transitioned differently every week, but usually early in the third game, they'd start drying in a hurry and I would have to move two boards left every other frame at a minimum.

My PBA Experience league... 'nuff said.  You need a varied arsenal to handle the transitions on those shots.

Scratch synthetic house I bowl in transitions this way for me.  3/4 of first game is same line then have to move left 2 boards.  That holds to about 2-3 frames in the second game then have to move another 2 boards and put a little more speed. Mid 3rd game I will have moved up 6" and left another 2-3 boards and slow my speed down.  Although, every once in a while, I have to move very little and that is when I usually shoot my best series.  This normally happens for me in Jan, Feb time frame.

Yeah I am sort of using the PBA league as a transition boot camp.

My house shot league changes more than the PBA Experience shots, at least I know how the lanes will play depending on what pattern is being put down that week. The house I bowl regular league in depends on if the head mechanic messed with the lane oiling machine that week or not.

If he did, some weeks I started off going straight up 5 and ended up standing 44 or 45 and crossing 27 out to 10, other nights the track burns up by the end of practice then I play between 15 and 20  out to 7 or 8, the rest of the night and I don't have to move after that.

I have usually been able to stay with the same ball most of the night in my PBA league, it varries each week as to which ball, but once I find what I am looking for I can genrally adjust my physical game to stay with it. We only have 6 guys per pair using the correct ball for the condition and playing simillar lines, where in league everyone but me seems to have the latest and greatest hook monster and uses it regardless of what the lane conditions are like.

What makes the transitions so difficult in the PBA Experience league for me is the way the patterns are designed first of all, but secondly how they are applied.  Because the lanes are stripped and the backends are completely fresh, carrydown becomes more pronounced than in a normal league for me.  Also, the Viper and Shark patterns both have a nasty habit of having the heads dry on the inside part of the lane.  On the Viper, I can just move right and point it from the gutter, or I can move left and swing it out into the dry.  On the Shark, moving right doesn't really help much, and moving left means you have to fight the carrydown on an already long pattern.  Good times, good times...  (I hate the Shark pattern so much)

I'm with Shelley on this one, it depends on who's bowling on the pair with you.  If you have the team that throws plastic or urethane bowling equipment, then the lanes seem to tighten due to the carrydown, but most nights you have the guys that throw the Total NVs or No Mercys on a condition where there's not a lot of oil in the heads, and you have a recipe for a long night especially if you don't utilize speed and loft adjustments.  Last season, I couldn't adjust to it correctly because I refused to utilize speed and loft adjustments to compensate for it, I just tried to change angles, and at this center, it usually doesn't work unless you're the only one playing left.  I even had a guy last year that sanded an Infinite One, needless to say, the heads were gone by the 5th frame of the first game.  Then other nights, I could utilize angle adjustments effectively and bowled well as a result.

Yeah that one was pretty wild.  I went from playing straight (it worked in the beginning) and finally took the hint to move way left and thats where I started striking again.  It was totally nutty to go from point A to point B like that but it seemed to work...
