How fast does your league shot transition?
« on: August 08, 2007, 02:26:00 AM »
I've noticed lately that people seem to post more about wanting or needing a ball for a specific timeframe in league, whether it be the first or second half of the night.  Does your league shot change that fast that you need to actively search for a new ball to keep in play as nothing else works?

I bowl in a league with 10 guys per pair yet I find myself rarely having to change balls during league play.  If the lanes dry up a bit I move in as the lanes dictate and as carrydown sets in I move back to adjust.

I'm sure some older houses see some goofy breakdown as the heads dissappear, but do the majority of bowlers really need to change balls in a 3 game set on a THS?

In my summer league the lanes really get into some big transition by the 5th frame of the 1st game.  I can start that game with one ball and by the 5th frame, I have already switched lines and balls.  Gets kinda frustrating to have to play the whole lane by the end of the first game.

I’ve seen about everything in league over time.

Move right, move left, never move, move every shot.

My early league doesn’t generally require a lot of adjustments. Maybe a slight move right during the carry down then at most a 5 board move left with my feet during play, generally only 3 boards are needed if any.

My late travel scratch league is second shift and sees everything.

I have had nights I literally had to adjust my line every shot during the night, ended up with my feet 18 boards left of my starting position and eyes were moved in 8.

Hmmm, in my club house, the summer pattern tends to change rapidly and vigorously. If fresh (stripped back end), the lane will take 5 players for about 3 games, and then transition starts noticeably. You either move ever deeper to search for oil in the fat oil tongue in the middle, or switch the ball to a milder piece for a new line close to the gutter and through the thin buffer zone. Carrydown will also become an issue when the deep lane play starts. In the course of 2 games, you might not be able to play the same area anymore. It is frightening, and needs a keen eye on when and how to change to keep scoring.

My official league features various patterns, and we play 2 5-men-teams on a fresh pair, changing after each game, for 3 games before the lanes are refreshed in the lunch break. Since it is a traveling league, lane surfaces and oil patterns vary strongly, but I had starts where I could get through the initial 3 game set with just one ball, while on others the lanes were very different from each other or noticeably broke down in the 3rd game, so that sticking to the old line or trying a new one for the rest frames was a true gamble.

That's why I like switching equipment during training and playing multiple lines - finding a new effective path to the pocket is essential when you recognize that current things go sour. Knowing what your equipment does and where to play it on the lane is really a big help in long-term league or tournament formats.

In our house, I see a direct corelation between the amount of hand in the release and the timeframe in which the lane transitions.

I see people, two different guy bowling on the same pair.  Guy #1 gets a lot of hand and a lot of roll on the ball while guy #2 is a mild release stroker with a good, weaker release.

Guy #1 has to start making his adjustment well into game 1, sometimes making it all the way into game 2 before major changes are needed. Guy #2 still playing the same basic shot, maybe moving a board, or two boards at most.

By the end of game two, the cranker ( guy #1) has made a major move( over 5 boards ), while stroker ( guy #2 ) is still withing the two board move he made in the forst transitional phase.

By the end of the third game, cranker guy ( #1 ) has had to move his feet deeper than he likes, changed to a milder ball, and trying to "lay off" it a it to get it clean through the heads because he doesn't want to use his spare ball for strikes, while stroker guy ( #2 ) has moved into the "meaty" part of the lane, stroking the ball up the inside of the original ball track, having made a total move of 3-5 boards during the night.

To make it all a bit shorter, the more release strength you have, the quicker the lanes seem to transition for you, at least at our center.

Most of my leagues seem to chage around the middle of the second game.

Even though I already know they ae going to change, I still have a hard time keeping up with transition. One of these days I will get it though.
