The object of bowling is to knock down the pins. Any speed seems to work. Throwing as hard as you do seems excessive. Might look impressive but doesn't help anything. Perhaps slowing down to 18 - 20 mph might allow you to improve your accuracy. Some of us throw much slower than that and seem to do OK.

There is no such thing as too much speed, really. It all comes down to doing what's comfortable while still maintaining accuracy. As for myself, I'm not a big guy, but I throw my spare ball at around 27 MPH, but it's kinda effortless for me. Plus, I can hit my spot at that speed with no problem, so why change? Other guys I bowl with, on the other hand, can't hit 20 MPH without me worrying they might launch it into the next lane over. So as long as you're not trying to launch it solely to impress chicks (although not a bad idea) and if you can hit your spot, I'd say don't worry about changing anything.

when abc-tv was televising the pba tour they charted ball speed one season in the mid 1990's for statistical purposes. average ball speed was between 18 and 19 mph.

Nothing is TOO Fast.

If your speed matches up with your revs then its fine.

If your throwing the ball 25MPH, you better be some cranker lol.

the average speed that abc-tv tracked was for strike balls only. shooting spares only requires accuracy unless double wood is involved. robert smith has thrown the ball 34mph at spares and i believe eugene mccune has cranked it up to 27mph. yet, neither of these players is a dominant force on the pba tour.

And Tommy Jones throws a laser beam at spares and is arguably the best player on Tour. What's the point?

Just because you throw it hard doesn't necessarily mean you're a poor spare shooter, that's not even close to true.

There is IMHO no real "too fast" or "too slow", even though excessive speed or the lack thereof creates some problems.

What's more relevant is IMO a healthy speed/revs ratio - a "good" benchmark is a 1:1 match of speed and hand revs, so that there is enough revolution on the ball to make it react in the time it has as it goes down the lane.

But: Low speed (I'd say 10mph or less) creates roll-out issues with weak hits and lack of drive through the pins, while high speed (hard to tell the limit here, but I'd say anything 20mph and beyond is contraproductive) increases the risk of pin "splattering", just as if you play with a polyester piece. The pins do not stay low and mix well, or the ball simply passes too quickly through the deck to mix it up (so wide-open spares and splits are frequent). I have seen some players in my league who tzreid to compensate for their poor release with brute force and speed (with matte particle balls even on light shots balls) - while some hits created impressive and loud strikes, most of the time you could count on those wide-open leaves and poor spare game on single pins to ruin a potentially good game. Such players hardly appear in higher leagues around here, only in house leagues or the lower officual league ranks, because they either only play "well" on their familiar THS or are too erratic in results to be a valuable player for higher leagues where competition is pretty hard and tight.

Its too fast if your ball doesnt read the lane.

The thing I would be concerned about is whether or not you are doing these speeds with muscle or gravity. As long as you have a nice free swing and can keep the speed the same, there is no problem. If you muscle it to get there, then some adjustments need to be looked into.

uncle crusty, just because you throw the ball hard that doesn't you better either. by the way, tommy jones is a great player but this past year he did not show he was the best in the pba. chris barnes and walter ray williams, jr., were a mile ahead of the other players in pba of the year points. these two players dominated almost all of the statistical categories.

i thnk if u have enough revs to make the ball face the pocket the correct way, then u r good

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

I have always thrown hard not as hard as you but still very hard. Their is nothing wrong witht rowing hard as long as you are accurate. accuracy is the most important thing if you are comfortable and not being mr. spray and pray out their speed is no big deal
