How hard is it to get mid-weight balls?
« on: June 21, 2008, 06:42:48 AM »
Been using 15lb for a while now and was looking to re-vamp the equipment when, quite by accident, I was put into a ball that weighs 14lbs, 7 oz after drilling and I like it. I know 9-10 oz shouldn't be a big deal, but I can feel the difference and it is a feeling of being so much more "balanced" in my approach, backswing, and delivery.

Several years ago I injured my wrist and went down to 14lbs, but came back up when the wrist got stronger again.  My average was just as high with the 14lb stuff, it was just much easier to find good used stuff in 15lb, so I went back up to 15lb, but lately have been considering going back down to 14's and this half weight ball I am currently throwing got me to wondering how hard it would be to get good, new stuff in mid-weights, say 14lb 8-10oz.

That's what I was afraid of.  I guess i will just have to be patient, watchful, and ask around until I can find some good ones.  I know a seller with a few, but they are older, discontinued items and i was wanting to get nice, NEW stuff for a change.

 Thanks

The pro shop in Vegas at Jones and Lake Mead was getting alot of storm and rotgrip half and mid weights.

Dont remember there name i think it is Las Vegas bowling supply not bowlinglasvegas.com, the guy there is pretty good driller named Billy Das he drilled a ball for me when he was at Santa Fe about 8 years ago before i became a K & K Bowling Services ball ho.

I believe my local proshop just got a re-release of Ebonite The One in 14lbs 15oz.  That would drill down to about 14.5.  It was either The One, Cell or Playmaker I am not 100% sure which.

One one shop around here actually buys the half weights cheaper and sells them for around the same price. he makes more profit.

Someone mentioned something about losing 10 ounces on a drilling.. I have never heard of that... I have always been led to belive that 3 ounces was normal.

Mo Pinel has been known to take a 16# ball down to a few ounces over 15# by maxing out the hole size and depths.  His cores weigh between 6-7 pounds though, so by getting into the core with a 1 1/4" hole he can really remove some weight and manipulate the RG and Diff.

3-4oz is typical for reasonable hole sizes and depths, even with a weight hole.  You've got to go out of your way to remove more than 5oz.

I did hear about a guy who sanded his ball down from a 15# to a 14# because he couldn't afford a new ball and needed to drop in weight.
