mean machine/equation
« on: August 12, 2006, 03:05:02 AM »
I got a Mean Machine last week, and will be getting the Equation drilled this week. MM is drilled aggressive(mildly speed dominant)for my high-track, high-speed(17-18mph), medium revs(300-350)style of play. PAP is approx. 5"-5 1/2" Should I get Equation drilled same way so as to use it when MM burns up my line after 2 games? Pin is slightly above fingers and 2" right of ring, while MB is just right of thumb(MM). Thanks for any suggestions!

While everyone has their own line of thinking, and not that one thing makes someone more right than another, I have 2 suggestions.

1. The last few years, I drilled 10 Robo Rules and well, 20 or more GP2s (yeah, thats sick I know)....BUT...when you use 1 ball, you can insure a different drill will give you a different look than something else you already have with that ball....same cover and core will react differently as you know with a different drill. (problem with this is you are limited to 1 ball...so you need to be able to make sure it can cover EVERYTHING you see with surface changes and different drills...thus why I needed so many of them to do so!)

2. By the same token, I have decided this year to use all of the current line balls and some old school stuff as well...and so I got a different reaction out of them, I drilled everything the exact same way....basically taking the drilling out of the reaction equation and making the differences I see between balls be due to the covers and cores....(problem with this is you are limited to one drill...which can be a problem obviously)

I can't tell you how angry someone can be when they buy a new ball, have it drilled a certain way as that is what they want, and it ends up reacting similar to something they already have....different drills on different balls can make 2 totally different balls closer in reaction....

I do understand that the Equation is a completely different core/coverstock/reaction than Mean Machine. Equation is skid-snap while Mean Machine is hard arc/big backend. I guess what I'm asking is, drilled the same way as MM, will Equation be a viable alternative after line is dried up after 1 or 2 games with Mean Machine?

That was my point...I guess I explained it without saying it....the Equation, a weaker cover than the Mean, drilled identical to your Mean, will get down the lane better (pearl resin vs dull resin of the Mean) and will have more energy for the backend, whihc means it will have more of a snap than the Mean will.

Thanks for the information! I do keep up with the Track forums also, username "wolfie", but as you are aware, the Track site is slow 'cause of the ball give-away. I was on last night, and it appears the new servers HAVE made the site a bit faster. As far as which ball comes out first... would you take Equation to take advantage of clean back-end for first game? Everybody on my team is righty also, similiar lines to the pocket, and the carry-down moves FAST! I have noticed that Mean Machine gets a little unpredictable when the carrydown is just moving, but on a day-old shot with LOTS of carry-down I can increase the speed a bit and play the same line forever. The transitioning is critical here, because it does move so quickly, and I only have a frame or two to make the decision to switch balls or keep trying to adjust my feet and target line. I am usually guilty of waiting too long.... who wants to switch balls after a 248 or 269? Thanks again for your feedback!

Based on my brief time with both bowling balls, I think the Equation would be a good first ball out of the bag on medium conditions and/or good to go to for a second ball once the carrydown hits, as it does have skid/snap tendencies. Would I drill them up the same way? Probably not, because I like different looks in terms of each ball I have. But I think based on your ball speed and rev rate, you probably could get away with a similar layout to achieve the desired reactions you want.
