How is Bowling not in the Olympics?
« on: August 30, 2004, 04:40:05 AM »
With some of the ridiculous sports they have in the Olympics, how is Bowling not one of them?  It's a sport that...

a) is highly regulated
b) has international presence
c) no one country would dominate

If beach volleyball is an Olympic sport, Bowling has to be in it.  If I recall it used to be in years ago.  Is there any talk about making it an Olympic sport again?  Sorry if this is a recent repeat topic.

I've been wondering the same thing for the past few days!! Some of the so called sports that make it are just down right gay.

On one of the NBC telecasts I heard a reference to the Olympic sport of trampoline.
TRAMPOLINE!?!?!?!
Give me a  break!  How can that be an Olympic sport but not Bowling?!?!?!?!

Let's not forget about ribbon twirling, friends.  That's a sport, right?  Bowling should be in the Olympics if you ask me.  I've heard in the past that it isn't due to not being able to have a level playing field.  I wish the ABC or now the USBA (is that right?) would step in and fight the good fight to have it in the Olympics.  I always hear about people wanting to attract others to the sport.  Having it in the Olympics would be a good way of going about it.

My favorite ridiculous sport is biathlon.  They do cross-country skiing and then stop and shoot.  Must be training for James Bond movie extras.  No, wait!...that would be DOWNHILL skiing and shooting simultaneously.  Now that would be interesting.  How about synchronized bowling?  Your five man team would have to look alike, move alike, and score alike; all at the exact same time.  In a new bowling concept, style points WOULD be awarded!

I've got a new concept for the winter olympics...luge bowling.  Each team has a luger and a bowler.  A luger from one team takes off down the chute.  After a few seconds head start, the bowler from the other team fires his ball down the chute after him.  If the luger doesn't go fast enough, he gets his skull crushed.  This sport would be certain to draw that desirable young male demographic the TV networks crave.

Bowling has never been an Olympic Sport.  It was used as an exhibition sport in the Olympics in the past.  So there was bowling competition, but a sport can only be used as an exhibition sport a certain number of times.  Then it must become fully recognized as an Olympic Sport or no longer be a part of the Olympics.

At least that is the explanation I have been given.

And i believe there is a bit of a problem because there are many governing bodies, and one of them isn't a world/international body.  I may well be wrong about this tho :-/

The only official reasons for rejection I have received from the IOC that might be considered responsive to the question, WHY, are as follows:

??because the Olympic Games cannot grow anymore and their size must be controlled if we want them to succeed in the future.?
?Statistics reviewed on federation affiliation, nations competing in major events and broadcast and press coverage of major events for most rejected sports did not indicate a higher level of global participation and interest than sports currently in the Programme, and therefore could not be considered to bring additional value.?
