I can help answer some of the questions for you.  I know that Tom Bertrand and Dario Frank cover your center (Hawthorn Lanes)  Both do an excellent job promoting the Lake county tournament which is the largest association tournament in the state.  (yes larger than both chicago metro's and elgin's combined)  A lot of that success goes to their efforts, that lake county board, and Ed Z (executive director).  I know for a fact that the only paid position on their board is the executive director position.  All other directors and officers are volunteers.  It is the same in the elgin, mchenry, dekalb, aurora, joliet, and chicago metro associations.  I have been in conventions, conferences, and seminars with all of these associations and I am familiar with their structures and finances.

just curious, where did you hear that USBC will get rid of local associations?  I have been to numerous conferences, seminars, and meetings and have never heard anything like that.  Combine at the local level to consolidate sanction processing and minimize expenses, but everything else will be basically unchanged.  There will always be a need for a house rep, local tournaments, and hall of fames.

the executive director (paid position) is responsible for sanctioning paperwork, banking, accounting, communications, bill paying, and organizational requirements.  We cover 21 bowling centers in our area and the directors/volunteers are each assigned a center(s) to present awards, communicate with managers, league officers, and bowlers. We will visit leagues to see if bowlers have questions, inform them of rule changes, and discuss issues (like usbc, hall of fame, local tournament).  Most of the directors have a real love for bowling and take pride in helping in any way that they can.
