 Hey guys.  Came across this gem several years ago. Loved them back in the day, and bought it with the intentions of using it, but just couldn't work up the nerve to punch holes in it once it got here.

 Well, I turned 56 this year. My knees and my back are starting to give me problems, and I may not be bowling much longer. I thought me and the old Nitro/R might just make our exit together after one last good year.

 What do you think?

Many people loved that ball. It was strong back then; so it should work well right now, polish or no polish.

Myself, i had a love affair with the Nitro/R2 pearl. Loved that one.

I know where there is an original (hated the remake for Ebo 100 years or whatever it was) undrilled Nitro R/2 solid, 2-3 pin....too bad its 16#.

Why not drill it?  You can compare side-by-side with a newer cover ball and really see the difference.  My guess is that it will be much weaker and slower response than the newer stuff.
Balls of yesteryear were bowled on oil patterns of yesteryear.  We're putting so much more down, and the oils are more slick in comparison.  Unless you're bowling on dry conditions there should be a noticeable difference.  Let us know.

I'm torn.

I Had the Nitro/R when it came out.. still have it, actually.. absolutely loved that ball. I actually preferred it over the Nitro/R2. I'd say to punch it up to see how it compares to today's balls, as I've seen some some conditions which a guy broke out his gold Rhino Pro and cleaned house. So you still never know what you can do with the right ball on the right conditions...

.. but on the other hand, you're dealing with a ball that is a rare gem that could either go for some serious $$$ or makes a great collector's item.

Lane,

Some places use moreoil and more viscous oils. Some places do not.
For instance, the Bowlmor places by me are dispensing oil with an eye dropper and only on every other 3rd Sunday!!!

I will never understand someone not drilling a ball, unless its a vizaball (Something you would display). But to leave a ball undrilled in its box, with the intention of never using it, to me is pointless.

Jeff,

Sorry to hear that.  My scratch league is second shift and I can use any ball I own.  Inside 12 board and it better be strong.  We use Kegel Ice with decent volume.

My other league gets fresh oil but it's a higher friction surface so my pearls tend to hit better for me.  I'd go nuts bowling on such parched conditions...

My old place, now owned and run by Bowlmor, gave me a taste of Ice oil about 2 1/2 years ago. I've been drooling over it ever since.

I left this place, May of 2015, never to return without kerosene and a book of matches. I've left my current place, Brunswick Carolier, former home of the PBA Open and the PBA Petraglia Open, this past May, never to return; it is now owned and operated also by Bowlmor - it's already gone down the crapper.
Both, at one time had been my home lanes. Very sad, indeed.
