Recovery from a bad league night?

How do you do it? I've had two bad weeks in a row, one worse than the other. I was wondering how do you get over it, since I've got league tonight. Do you shake it off? Go out and practice a few games? kick the ball return and curse the equipment and lanes? I'm not sure how to recover from it. Just a bit curious about how you guys do it, since we're all mortals and can't have an 800+ every week. Thanks for the help!

Do you know what it was that made them bad nights?  If so, go a half-hour early and bowl a game or two, specifically trying to fix that problem.  Even if your score sucks in practice, you might be able to work out whatever kink is in your game.  Some of my bad nights are because my balance is bad and I tug almost every shot.  A few frames of concentrated, deliberate practice on finishing with a good balance, getting my foot back underneath me instead of to the side, can make all the difference.

If you don't know what's wrong, you just know you're making lousy shots, a week off may be more beneficial.  A lot of practice might only serve to reinforce any developing bad habits.  Might be worth paying for a sub if you're able to come back a week later shooting 100+ pins over the last time you bowled.

Or ask a friend who knows your game (or, you know, a coach) to watch you and see if they can identify anything obviously wonky.  A coach you've never worked with before may not know what you usually do well enough to figure out what's different, a knowledgeable teammate might.

I agree though. You need practice, but not if you are going to spend your practice time repeating whatever is "wonky". Hopefully you have somebody who knows your game who can help you out of the funk. If not...just go back to basics. Break down you approach to get your timing where it should be. Only after your footwork and timing are in sycn, can you begin to work on your release. Good luck...it took me three weeks of stinking the place up to get my game back.

If I started heading into a slump I take my Video Camera to the lanes with me and tape myself. Then head home, watch it and compare it to a tape I made of me throwing the ball well..... This will help me pick up on what is a mess.... If I see nothing different then I know it's a head thing and work on that....

There is one great thing about league bowling...

No matter how badly you bowl, there is always next week.

Unfortunately, it's also true that no matter how well you bowl, there is always next week.  

League bowlers always have next week.  Many of us wonder why we pay for the privilege, or how dumb we have to be to come back next week after our performance this week.

I have a general idea of what it was, and it's more often than not the mental game. I wasn't getting good carry, left a lot of pocket splits and got frustrated, which in turn led to a lot of opens. Which led to bad scores, which led to a pissy ride home. Any tips on how to get into the right frame of mind for league?

i have been there and really a big part of it is your mental game. it plays a big part in your game. do something relax before league and do something to relax in the alley. when i start to get worked up in league i make myself think im just hanging out with freinds and throwin a couple of balls. i make myself think im in the first frame and it doesnt really matter what i do. i take extra time with my preshot routine and just do it.


so many times i have had a really good week only to come back the next week and without even know it have that pressure of trying to shot good again and just doing horrible. my mental game has had to really improve for my scores form, release, ect... to be the same.

The only thing you can do, execute on your next shot.  Whether you got a ringing 10, a solid 8 or what, you can't go back anyhow.  Just execute your shot, and try to remember it's just bowling.
