How long do you think it will take you to return to form?
« on: April 06, 2020, 08:26:40 PM »
Once we are back bowling again, how long do you think it will take you to return to form. Although I haven't bowled summer league the past maybe 5 summers or more I have done the random tournament during those summers...The biggest layoff I have had was from 2000 - 2003 , I was out of the sport for 3 1/2 years and during that time I bowled maybe twice. When a guy I used to know got me back into it, I had a so so practice session a few days before my official return, and then my first 2 weeks were pretty bad but by the 3rd week I was consistently dropping 600's

That thought crossed my mind. We have dates in Reno for June 29th and 30th, so it's possible that I might not have a chance to throw a ball before heading to the tournament.

Then I remembered that I kinda suck even when I'm bowling a lot, so it shouldn't matter much.  :o ;D

I don't think it will take that long, maybe a few games. The only good thing about the time off is my forearm muscles were extremely sore. So I should be all heeled up to start the summer season!

It's like riding a bicycle. Once you figure it out the first time, it only takes practice, practice, practice to recoup what you had previously. I was out of bowling for 30 years to raise my family and started back once again. Had some of my best games upon my return, that is until I took lessons from a silver coache and changed my whole style. Then, I got old(er) and it's been a slide ever since, although I still extremely love the sport of bowling and the comradeship of team mates & others I bowl with in free time.

It all depends.

If you refer to physical form, that shouldn't take long at all. Missy, Verity, and Shannon have been sharing tips and tricks they are doing to stay in physical form throughout this, even to the point of rolling a ball against a door in their house (plenty of padding against the door to prevent damage). That combined with visualizing the arrow/board/target you're wanting to hit should keep you in good physical form.

Mental form is going to be the bigger issue. A lot of that comes into play based on the results of what you left on the lane. adjustments, when to make the ball change, etc., etc. None of that can be done in a house, unless your last name is Doyle. And seeing that that mental form stays sharp due to repetition, it will take longer to get that back than the physical form, as we can work on the physical form even when not on the lanes.

In short, physical form shouldn't take long; mental form will take longer. Not too long, but at least longer than physical form.

More time off the easier it is to forget bad habits. :)

I second this, I was just about to say that I think most people will return in better form than they left just because you have the down time to reset the hard drive so to speak.

This whole thing just gets my golf game a head start. More time to concentrate on the tougher game.

Golf courses, driving ranges, and even mini-golf are all closed around here.  The only golf anyone is doing around here is Wii golf, practicing their swing in the front/back yard, or putting down the hallway into a cup.

I think the big thing that all this has reinforced is I don’t really miss bowling at all and this could be the event that makes me not return. I know a few people who feel this way.

I somewhat miss it, but with my current schedule, I could see missing a couple of years for the first time.

I was doing fine in the winter leagues until I started school, then it was just too much. This break came just in time, at least for me.

Prob will take me a few games to knock the rust off.....physically.  I've enjoyed the time off to let my hand (which was nagging me a bit) rest.

I'm a little bummed that my summer sport league is in jeopardy.  I enjoy the "bowling" part of that as much as the social aspect, whereas winter leagues are more of just enjoying the social aspect.

Bowling for me is a nice escape from work and the toddler.  Not that either are "bad" but bowling is a nice way to "turn off" for a few hours.  And drinks (and stuff  ;D ) too....... :)

75 games Usually about 25 games a week for three weeks to get to a level where I am comfortable that I can bowl a block of 6 with with less than 3 opens on a house condition.

I have been maintaining my fitness and a couple of practice/league sessions will help me physically, but what I will really need are some semi competitive tournament reps to mentally get back into form.
