The use of PED in bowling is more of a pain and injury recovery tool then bigger, faster, stronger perception.
Considering many bowlers miss a lot of games or even lose careers because of injures I think that is a good sign PED's aren't very prevalent, but I wouldn't say it isn't there.
Just like with baseball bowling has a long season and a LOT of games. If you can have a quicker recovery time from pain or no pain because of PED types of substances you would have an advantage over someone who doesn't. Most of the main touring pros average at any tournament within a few pins of each other. If you can eliminate an injury or pain you will have an advantage over someone who doesn't.
I have talked to people who have used PED's mainly for gym purposes and they will tell you how amazing it is, and what it can do for you in terms of ability and energy.
Imagine your first day bowling in two weeks and you have no pain, throw the ball great and bowl 20 games just fine. Then the next day you come back and have the exact same feeling, then the third day the exact same feeling. How much better can you score in that condition then when you come out the next day and your a little fatigued, your hand is sore, maybe your lower back and your knee are hurting? Which will have a better chance at success and being a few pins better in a sport where only a few pins separate the best?
Be good, or be good at it.
