how long do you use last years average in your leagues??
« on: September 04, 2006, 08:28:35 AM »
the league i bowl in you have to use last years average for the first 7 weeks. they say its to prevent sandbagging. i think 7 weeks is a bit excessive since it is 20% or 1/5 of our league which is 35 weeks. i can see maybe 4 weeks but 7 weeks seems too long. they almost voted to stretch it to 8 weeks, but it didnt pass. just wondering what was the standard out there.
lets face it... this isnt deadlifting or picking up women.. its BOWLING!!!! Stop acting tough when you roll 4 strikes in a row!!!

they set a new one for us every season. altho i didint join my leauge till the last 1/3 of the way threw, and i only had the first half the year before, so they freakin combined the 2 and dropped the average alot! took the whole rest of the season to get it back up to a decent #.

My leagues use book for entering average only, never for handicap purposes.  Some leagues in my center do use book for the first 9 games to calcualte handicap.

Our leagues in NJ vary from 1 week (3 games) to 3 weeks (9 games). I think 3 - 4 weeks (9 - 12 games) is rational. Much more than that makes little sense. There's only so much you can do to curtail sandbagging.

We establish an average the first week that we bowl. Seems to be the only fair way to do it. The only time last years average is used is to figure out Most Improved Bowler. If a person is new to the league, then they would use their average from the other league or their average after 4 weeks. if it goes up higher then anyone else, the would win MIB for that year.

one league i bowl in you use your avg. all year. you can never go under it but you can go over. last year i came in at 191 ,but i avgd. way under that ,my avg. stayed at 191 no matter how bad i bowled. this year it is 173 to start. Another league we start fresh every year.

9 games (3 weeks) in my Monday night league, and they also have a rule that if you haven't established a league average from the previous season in that house that you need to establish an average each of the first 3 weeks, take the handicap from that night.... and then do the same thing the next week until you have 9 games in the league.

In my Wednesday night league I'm bowling in I've heard that they re-rate you every 18 games, so it should be interesting to see how the handicap works in this league...
