I used to catch a lot of flak about bringing too many balls (6) and switching too soon and too often, but I'm beginning to wonder if I'm cutting my own throat by being too conservative will ball changes.

I typically get the whole first game in with one ball, then start to feel the need to change around the second frame of game two. But I've been a little stubborn, trying to make the original ball work until later in that game.

Or, should I just not care how it's looked upon, and switch 100 times a game if that's what it takes? I'm starting to see that familiar pattern of "high first, low second, high third game" starting to emerge with my bowling lately. I know it's from not managing that first transition well, but I'd just like to get some feedback on when you guys decide not to try to make release adjustments any longer, and start making ball adjustments instead.

I personally will stick with the same ball until I lose carry or dont get a good look I have most of my arsenal to play the same line. I tend to start out with my dulled radical inferno drilled pin above and between fingers(very consistant reaction and can burn a nice little line). I then will pull out my h20 drilled stacked it controls the midlane very well for me turning over a touch sooner but still creates good angle. Then I carry my awesome flip if all else fails I move way left and let the ball do its thing(or if they put out a good amount of oil). Then I will usually use my xxxl for my last game playing up the dry where everybody has been playing all night.

I usually bring 6 balls to league, knowing full well that I probably won't need all 6! I usually use three, but I must say, bringing the six balls has paid off handsomely this year.

I have had at least three instances where we bowled against top teams in our league, and for whatever reason.....the shot got changed......and I just happened to have the right piece available!

Now, with that being said, I usually start thinking ball change between the 1st frame and the 4th frame of the second game. It all depends on my carry, and who I am bowling against. If I am bowling against a player with a big sweeping hook, who crosses my line, then most definitely I will be making some serious ball changes, so that I can stay in my comfort zone.

I have been criticized all year about bringing so many balls to league. I merely laugh at them. They are my balls, first of all. I've drilled them for specific purposes, to do specific things. How else am I going to find out if all my studious knowledge, that I've picked up from BallReviews,......works, if I don't use it and gain even more knowledge regarding lane play?

If you don't use it......ya lose it! So I intend on using as many balls as needed, and as often as needed. Case closed.

As I often tell a lot of my friends...(and this is usually at tournaments, with a difficult pattern out)....I will always have options. I will never be shut out of a pattern!

This is the example that I learned from experience. When I first started league bowling, back in 1992, I lucked up by bowling with a very competitive team. They took me under their wing, as I had a lot of handicap back then.
We ended up bowling for the championship against the 1st place team. All year long we had bowled on heavy oil. I was great on heavy oil. For some reason, the championship match that season was placed on lanes with medium-lite oil. I was great for the first game. Being a novice bowler, I wasn't too  good on adjustments. My carry went away for the 2nd and 3rd games, and I was forced to move inside of my opponents, who were tearing up my track area. But I didn't know this at that time. So I endured two, back-to-back excruciatingly low games. I got split after split, and kept thinking it was a poor release by me that kept getting me these ridiculous leaves.

Meanwhile, my opponents merely chuckled, while they downsized to weaker pieces,
........never moved......stayed in the same track area.....and kept right on striking! I was sure to make note of what they did, and how they did it!

I think you shouldn't care what others think, although it helps if your team mates can help you decide on a ball change if necessary.  I used to be the most stubborn person ever during transition and would constantly go high with the occasional strike.  I fixed that, but I've never been too good with call changes either.  Even today, I will move on the lane first, and probably change hand positions before switching balls.  The problem with switching balls for me is that I won't know exactly what my next ball is going to do, so I might take a couple frames to get lined up again.  This is probably because I don't play around with equipment a lot in practice and see where I'd need to stand to be back in the pocket with another ball.

If the transition is giving you a bad enough reaction to have a consistent low middle game, that may be your green light to use something else to give you a better look.

I used to change all the time, then it got impressed upon me by my coach to learn to do more with the ball rather than relying on multiple equipment pieces to do the job.

Mostly, I found that to be good advice. But there are times when I just can't adjust beyond a certain point and be consistent.

Of the 6 I bring to league, one is plastic and the other five typically change out from time to time. I'll typically end up using either two or three of those five every night. Occasionally, I can stay with the same ball all three games -- but that is rare, and it depends on whether the lanes we drew for league that night either had high open play during the day or had been re-oiled (it's never the same thing twice).

Typically, what I face is this:

1) First game: Best shot we'll see all night (obviously), can play the track area up to about the 8th frame and then I have to chase it in.

2) Second game: Fast transition. By the second or third frame the ball I'd been using is checking up. I can tilt it a little and be OK, but by about the sixth or seventh frame, the breakpoint starts to get wiggly.

3) Third game: Almost around the time this game starts, I can pull my dry-lane stuff out, jump back to the right and play direct.

It's that part of the night from about the 4th frame of Game 2 until the start of Game 3 that is hurting me the most.

I started this year (after 13 year layoff) with just a Track Synergy.  I used that for half the season and bowled alright with it but I wanted to try "new" technology so I picked up a Cell Pearl.  It's a great ball but once I got use to it, and got my grip correct, my speed went up a bit and I had more revs than I was use to.  I couldn't pick up a 10 pin to save my life, so enter the Lane 1 XXXL Starburst.  Up until that point, I never used more than one ball and I could never go back since 10 pins are a piece of cake for me now.

I finished the season with the Cell Pearl as my only "strike" ball and towards the end I was having issues with the it moving way too early half way thru the second game.  I have it at 4000 abralon btw.  I bowl on wood lanes and they go from medium/heavy oil to bone dry very quickly.  To combat this for next season, I now have a Lane 1 Chainsaw.  I can't wait to give it a try, it's sitting on my doorstep right now as it was just delivered (Thanks Doug!).  I might be subbing in a summer league in a couple weeks, so that will be my chance to make the switch when I feel it's necessary.

The main reason that I changing balls is this:

1. Ease of carry
2. Ease of playing the lanes(comfort zone)
3. Keeping it fun!

I do not enjoy, having to move all the way inside, standing on 35-40, ramping up my speed, and my revs......all of which I can do.....but cannot do well!

These types of adjustments make bowling work, and not fun anymore.

If I can make bowling on a lite-oil, dry shot, appear as if I'm bowling on a medium-hvy house shot......why not?

I use 1 ball unless Im doing really bad and cant make it any worse. I usually bring a solid and pearl, always 1 ball that is stronger. Sometimes its 2 solids or 2 pearls, plus the spare. 45 pounds of bowling balls is MORE than enough for me.

At my home house I normally try to use one ball only, just keep it simple and adjust to the shot changing. The only issue with this is that on the high end the lanes are a different surface and breakdown early and normally cause some issues.

At most I use 2 balls though, usually 1 but If I have to chase it way inside my lack of hand tells me that its not an effective place to score I will go to something weaker.

I normally have 3 balls plus my plastic spare ball.  Some nights depending on the pattern, humidity, lane draw I might play with the same ball all night, some nights I may change mid way through the second game or at the end of the second game.  I will change when I have made some moves and am hitting the pocket but am having trouble carrying.  It is really what you are comfortable with.

Let me reiterate what I'm doing here: Of the six balls, one is plastic spare. So we're talking about five choices for a strike ball.

Of those five, I will typically use just two in a given night. It might be Nos. 1 and 2, or Nos. 4 and 5. Problem is, I don't know which ones it's going to be until I see just how bad the shot is. There are nights I can make it through with the same ball, but those are rare.

Contrast this to later in the week, the top scratch league. On that league, they ALWAYS re-oil before bowling, and on that league, I can stay with one ball pretty much all night. But on our early-shift Tuesday league, where the oiling hasn't been as consistent, I don't know whether I'm going to need medium stuff or dry-lane stuff until I start rolling. Ergo, why I bring five strike balls. It's not so much five balls, it's two groups of two with one in the middle, if that makes any sense.

I usually start with my Attitude Shift (solid cover) on oilier nights for the 1st game maybe 2, then bring in the Shift.  Some times I have to switch middle of 2nd game, & others not at all.  Very rare though.  Other nights I've had to start & finish with the Shift.  I also have a plastic Storm Logo viz-a-ball for right side spares.  So I usually bring only 3 balls.  This coming year I'll be starting out with 4 or 5.  I have a VG that I'm trying to work in (maybe to replace the Attitude) & a shiny pearl drilled pin over bridge (X-Factor) to experiment with.
