This makes me sad...
« on: July 13, 2016, 06:42:44 AM »
This will be a lengthy post,

Going off the post of a true honest bowlingball review has got me to thinking.....
This game obviously has changed over at least the last 30+ years (or more) where back in the day, it was all about mechanics, and fundamentals and repeatability, and accuracy, etc, etc;  But ever since the resin era has come out and evolved, it appears it's more about what the balls do than about what the bowlers' do physically, mentally, and mechanically on the lanes.

I have worked so hard the last 5 yrs to improve my game (lefty and can play all parts of the entire lane versatility) and while yes the conditions have changed and it's about matching up to the conditions and the right surface, you have to have the mental capacity to repeat shots, adjust, and make spares, REGUARDLESS of equipment used. I have no issue with the new technology as it benefits us all in some way, however, I wish bowlers' would focus more on their PHYSICAL AND MECHANCAL GAMES more then any performance ball made. Does anybody share my concern and frustration on this matter? Opinions welcome.

Ps. Bowling balls REGARDLESS of performance level are COMPLIMENTRY PIECES( meaning secondary to a bowlers' game first)  and NOTHING MORE!!!!

Everyone has the opportunity to beat anyone else, regardless of skill level, at any time in bowling.  That's what makes it a great sport.

I think skill level should matter. It does in every other sport.

In my opinion skill still matters in Bowling. In any sport any team or player can win on any given occasion. We see it in tennis, golf, and team sports like football etc.

I view bowling being more susceptible to upsets than those other sports.  A pro tennis player will not lose to a beginner no matter how many times they play.  There obviously is a chance once the beginner's skill level increases.  The same with golf and of course, team sports.

But bowling provides opportunities for the best pros to lose to very low-skilled bowlers, especially on sport shots where the unskilled bowler's style can make the conditions irrelevant.  Even on hard shots, I can see an unskilled bowler shooting 150 or higher piping up the middle with a pro shooting less.

I do still believe the winning percentage of a pro increases as the duration increases.

House shots can blur the distinction but that has always been true.  I knew guys 40 years ago averaging more in league than the top tour average.  The short formats that predominate today also blur the distinction.

Duration is key. The longer the format, the more that the cream will rise to the top.

agree.  that is the problem I have always had with the modern balls.  What they do to a pattern so quickly has pretty much destroyed longer format tournaments.

It makes me sad that the top averages in my league right now are 240+.  To put that into perspective, that means the bowler has to have lots of 260s and 270s because 210s and 220s are unavoidable.  To put that into perspective, that means the bowler has to throw 10 or 11 strikes in a single game for a 3 game series every week.  What's even more crazy, is that this bowler is improving his average each week.  And even crazier is that the top 3 females have averages over 220.

Not really sad though.  It would make me sadder if I could come back after 7 years of not bowling and be the best in my 28 team league.

What is really sad is the state the PBA is in.  They have managed to do all the wrong things that it's almost comical at this point.  No real regulations on balls outside of RG and differential and of course ball weights.  Telecasts are so amateur that I'm willing to bet I could produce a better telecast by hiring one of the top YouTube channels to film a show.  Now the oil is colored.

Yea, seeing those house bowlers light up their home patterns is sad. Until they go to a tournament like the USBC Open, then it becomes quite funny to watch them struggle to shoot a 500 series.
