How many balls do you really need?
« on: November 16, 2003, 04:01:18 PM »
As an avid golfer, I know you can get caught up in all the hype with the new stuff coming out.  I went through it for a few years -- having way too many drivers, more irons than I could ever play an too many putters to count.  Now I'm back into bowling after a long layoff and can feel the bug hitting again -- "If I only had this ball....."  I bought my Truck and couldn't really do anything with it, so I took a lesson.  Now, I at least know how to hit almost any combo on most conditions with one ball.  My biggest problem was last week -- I went to practice and the lane they put me on was completely toasted!!  I've never seen a ball come back with NO oil on it!!  I was lost -- rolled 6 games and had to quit or I was going to screw myself up.  I figure I need another ball for that condition -- but the big question is when does it end???  How many balls are too many??

I carry 5 to almost all places I go.  Many people carry more.  My basic arsenal covers almost anything I would normally run up against and if not then I adjust the best I can.  I've got one that goes real long and flips over, one that goes medium and sets and drives, one set up the same way but a little more aggressive, a banana hook particle and a spare ball.  If I start to see a trend then I may punch something different.  As for new stuff I really don't pay attention to the golly gee wizz new stuff.  There is a new ball every 30 minutes around here and I only get one when there is a need.(For My Game)

I'm the last guy that should answer this question! I have TOO MANY BOWLING BALLS .. and I'm continuing to look at others as they come out!

I'll look at this question as .. HOW MANY BALLS DO YOU NEED AT ONE SESSION?

To answer this .. I think THREE is sufficient. I THINK one for HEAVY/MEDIUM and DRY conditions will do it.

There will be BOWLERS that will say ONE IS ENOUGH .. and ADJUST/ADJUST/ADJUST .. I'm sure they can do it .. BUT THEN THEY ARE MUCH BETTER THEN ME!

Lots of luck in your bowling!

I take 4 to league, and while the first 3 can be interchangeable I never leave home without the White Dot

Tonight I"m taking my Red Pearl Hammer to league in an extra bag for practice.  I'm also going to take the U-Dot just to see what happens.  Wish me luck

Topics like these make me laugh. A lot of the bowlers here will post "one to three balls are MORE than enough!" I think it makes them feel macho for sticking with the good old days where you only owned one ball. Honestly though, you CAN'T believe less than three to four balls is a good arsenal for serious competition.

I understand the people who bring only a couple of balls to league. That's perfectly fine. But would all of you who say "just adjust" really do that in a big money tournament? When everyone else has a ball that matches up EXACTLY to the shot, you better not be messing around trying to adapt one of the two balls you rolled in that day. Like it or not, we have to face that fact that holding the right ball plays a huge role in today's game.

I kind of liken it to golf and the whole wedges debate -- do you carry 4 and have one for any shot, or do you bring 2 or 3 and learn to play the shots to let you have other clubs in the bag.  I kind of pride myself on being able to play the shots, so I take fewer wedges with me.  When it comes to bowling, I'm lost!  Not only do you have all the different types, but there's also different weights and different drillings which I can't even begin to understand!  I'm probably going to look for a 15# that will handle most conditions I'll see in league and maybe add a plastic or urethane for really dry conditions.  After that, if I get to try to play tournaments, I'll revisit the whole ball issue....

I have 3 balls, going on 5, 2 on the way. I use my urethane scout for dry, my predator jungle green for medium, my viz-a-ball for spares, and the 2 balls i have coming are a Monster SlayR and a Monster Bruiser, I plan on using the slayR for dry, and the Bruiser for wet to soaked lanes. You can never have to many balls

Now if I could only get my wife to let me get the ones I want.  Although she did let me get two new ones for Christmas, plus a new 3-ball roller and ball for her.

I currently have my Truck,  a Burgandy Hammer is on the way and a Sonic X from my Christmas list.  I doubt I'll use the Truck much, but we'll see.....

I also agree. I bring in 6 a night (spare ball, one for dry, two for medium with different drillings, and two more for heavier shots, also with different drillings). More times than none I only use 3-4 including spare ball for the night, which makes me think maybe only bringing in 4 would work. Of course the day I do that will be the day that a ball that I didnt bring in would match up better and I am too lazy to go out to my car and get it (I keep 10 in my car and rotate on occasion). Every time a new ball comes out, if it loks like it would match up well for me, I want to get one, but that is more or less adding weight to my trunk, or my floor in the bedroom. If I were to sell a couple every time I got a new ball, I wouldnt have that big of a problem, but knowing me that will never happen.

Carnac sayyyssssssssss..........!

37, 38, 39!!!!  Hey, that's the number I own!

I bowled my best when I had 4!!  Including spare.

TO be really serious I think 6 and a spare is all one needs.
