How Many Bowling Balls Do You Use
« on: March 22, 2010, 03:30:06 AM »
I've notice several people have more than two bowling balls, just wondering how anyone can afford to buy so many.  I've got one that I use most of the time and can't afford to buy a new bowling balls every week, how can anyone do it?

Its all about priorities.  You have a lower priority on bowling than others on here.  That is all.  I personally carry 4 and a spare ball with me.  Most times I dont need but one or 2.  Friday night I needed all 4+the spare ball.  All depends on what is going on.

I have several, but usually only use two. I have one for medium oiled, fresh lanes (CODE), and one for the track after the shot burns out (ORBIT EXTREME).

I don't like big skid/flip reactions, and tend to use drillings and surfaces that allow for a smoother reaction.

Phoneman, I beg to differ, bowling is not lower priority, if anything I think to much about it, I average 215 with one ball on a difficult shot in a scratch league, I do not use a spare ball.  I simply can't buy a ball every week, wish I could, but I'm not doing bad with one ball

I can't afford to buy lots of equipment but I have 4 balls that were all purchaced in a span of a year and a half.  I just got back into bowling in the 08-09 season so I needed to buy some equipment.  I've had a few others in this time that I tried out and just didn't like (Lane #1 Starburst XXXL and Dynamo-X2, both were used pieces).  I've found things around the house that I haven't used forever and sold in order to buy gear, or in the case of the Chainsaw, I traded a R/C truck for it.  I won the C-System in a raffle and the Cell and Cell Pearl I found great deals on NIB.

I can't afford to buy gear, but I find ways to do it.  I do think that I'm set for quite a while with what I have now though.  If I had the money, I'd have a lot of bowling balls, but my priorities are to my wife and twin girls.  Hopefully in a few years I have the time and money to start bowling a few tournaments.

I get sick of people bashing guys for having several balls.  Who cares!  If a guy wants to bring 9 balls to league more power to him.  I take 3 to league and own 6 total.  I personally like to experiment with different stuff to see how each ball reacts.  I really don't take league very seriously which is partly why I only average 206.  There are a few guys in our league that bring one ball and average very well with it on a THS.  Great for them, I could also do that but how boring would that be to play the same shot over and over again with the same ball on the same pattern.

What makes your shot so difficult? You avg 215 doesnt seem difficult to me.

I take 6 balls to tournaments 3 solids 3 Pearls. League I only take 3 or 4 depending on my mood. I have 7 in my line up and will be adding more soon.

And +1 to Phoneman bowling doesnt seem to be very high on your list.

I take 5 balls to league. I don't buy a new one every week either. I don't get rid of my old ones that work and try a new one if I think it will fit in. Last week the oil machine malfunctioned and we got very little oil. Good thing I had a Urethane ball. Week before too much oil had a particle with me saved the wins for my team both times. These games are same house "same" shot.

Look for used bowling balls on this site or eBay.  You can save quite a bit especially if you find ones with the same span - put in your own finger insert sizes/preference, slug/plug the thumb to get your pitches.  I think most of my non-Visionary balls are used.

Look for older, discontinued new balls on this site, eBay, or online bowling shops.  If you are not bowling tournaments and don't need the latest and greatest, you can probably save a bunch that way.  A lot of my 'new' balls came that way.

Find a local ball whore and get to be friends with them, you can get some balls cheap or free that way.    Don't know how many balls I've either given away or sold cheap to teammates or friends.

my advise is if you want to buy more balls and really cant afford it just get in brackets every week. if you bowl fairly decent and have handicap then you will have no problem winning a lil extra cash. if i buy a new ball i usually get in 30 dollars worth of brackets and usually cash if not win all and that typically pays for the ball.

I think I bought more new bowling balls in the last several months than used ones than any of year that I've been bowling. I normally take 3-4 to league because I bowl in two different houses and the THS are the same every week. For tournaments I take all 7 with me.

League bowling is fun.  Bring as many bowling balls as you can afford, but don't get mad when everyone is making fun of you for it.  Not because you have so many bowling balls, but because you're bowling on a THS and going through your 6 ball bag each night and still averaging in the 170's lol.

This is trip how angry people get on a simple question...  Give it a break...

Personally I had about 10 + balls and gave them away and bought 3 that I am satisfied with.. Heavy Oil, Medium, and Dry -- That excludes my plastic...

For me, it''s too easy to buy balls off the internet(I have 5 blank and 17 drilled) Am I that good that I need that many bowling balls? NO WAY!!! Am I that rich that I can afford so many bowling balls? Absolutely NOT... So without starting another internet vs. pro shop barbeque, I''d say if you want to save the most money, watch the websites of each different manufacturer. When they are introducing new balls, they''re usually discontinuing balls and those can be had at a dastically reduced price. By the way, it helps to know someone who can drill them for you
