How Many Bowling Balls Do You Use
« on: March 22, 2010, 03:30:06 AM »
I've notice several people have more than two bowling balls, just wondering how anyone can afford to buy so many.  I've got one that I use most of the time and can't afford to buy a new bowling balls every week, how can anyone do it?

I did the ebay thing and have only bought 3 new balls over the past 3 years.  One of which was a Morich Awesome Finish 16 that I got for 60 bucks new and now have sold for 25 bucks cuz it was too heavy.  The only ball I paid full price for was my Brunswick Fury 110 bucks. My current "arsenal"/ball list is:

Usable-

900 Global Break S75 14lb NIB (80 bucks)
Visionary Gladiator pearl 15lb (65 bucks)
Ebonite NVS 15lb (40 bucks)
Brunswick Radical Inferno 15lb (Have 2) (about 40 each)
Brunswick Fury 15lb (110 bucks)
Hammer Raw Anger 16lb (50 bucks) Too heavy and have to get rid of...and it's cracking around fingers...sigh
Storm X-factor 15lb (40 bucks)

Never drilled for me -

Columbia Wicked 15lb (40 bucks) Never had had it redrilled and needs resurface bad!
Ebonite Turbo 16lb (free - father in laws)
Ebonite Gyro 14lb (free...really old, might be plastic?!?!?)
Ebonite Wildcat 14lb (free...old as well and needs some work)

Dont have anymore -
Hammer Hawgzilla (40 bucks - gave it away as a Christmas gift like an idiot...lol)

Anyhow, you can see I've landed some alright balls for pretty cheap. Most I've only had to move the thumb and get rolling.  One of my Radical Infernos still need to have some plugging and redrilling for me, but it's usually only cost me like 15 bucks more than above prices to get these balls fit for me.  If you are carrying a good avg w/o doing all this, be happy.  That and my wife hates that I have so many bowling balls around this place...lol!

I take the same four everywhere I bowl.

I have a four ball roller might as well fill it up.

I bowl in four different houses each week between practice and league so those four I use.

Sometimes I may toss in a plastic ball for spares but generally I use plastic.

A lot of people who don''t know any better make comments but they get brushed off.

I also do what MI_2_AZ suggested buy single drilled equipment in great shape.  My fingers are little I don''t take a lot out of the ball when drilled it saves me tons of money.

If you take 9 balls with you more power to you I just hate to be your back lugging that much in and out of the house.

League bowling is fun.  Bring as many bowling balls as you can afford, but don't get mad when everyone is making fun of you for it.  Not because you have so many bowling balls, but because you're bowling on a THS and going through your 6 ball bag each night and still averaging in the 170's lol.

I use 2.

How can anyone do it?   Well, I imagine everybody is different and has different circumstances, but here's some ways:

Make your breakfast/lunch:  This will be cheaper than buying your meals.

Make your own coffee:  This will be cheaper than running into Starbucks for a $5 latte!

Buy 6/12 packs, or even 2 liter bottles of soda:  Take 1 or 2 with you to work and save the money you would be feeding the vending machine.

Stop smoking:  This will save you $4-6 per pack.

Buy a Flowbee:  save that money you would give to the barber and put it towards the bowling ball fund!

Geico!  Just one 15 minute call could save you 15% or more on your car insurance!

As a pro shop operator I mention to bowlers that having more than one ball provides options (assuming the balls chosen by the bowler are different) so when lane conditions are different from normal there is an option...no different than going to the golf course with more than one iron...options.  Of course, the expectations of the bowler are part of the equation.  A 200-210 average is a good average and most high average bowlers (220 and above) can average 20? with just about any ball on a typical house pattern (including plastic).  However, to average 220+ the ball reaction to the pocket has to be just right to carry that extra 2 or 3 "off hits" for strikes instead of 10''s or 7''s.  I''m from the era that used hand positions and speed to alter ball reactions slightly and I still do that today.  However, if changing balls is a quicker and easier method for getting back to the pocket when the condition is very different than usual, that''s the right thing to do and that''s when more than 2 or 3 options is needed.  If a 20? average is good enough for you, don''t worry about getting extra equipment for those very different conditions.

By the way, if you take care of equipment by cleaning, retexturing, polishing (if needed), and warming the oil out of the coverstock on a regular basis a ball will last a very long time.  So, buying 5 or 6 balls over the course of 2 or 3 years is affordable for a lot of people. (Over time high-performance balls won''t keep the same ''new ball'' reaction but they will still have a good reaction.)

Did I open up a can of worms or what, thanks for all the comments, it was eye opening.  The one thing I worry about is if I buy a ball and it doesn't work, I usually sell but I'm so wrong the next ball I get won't work I just use what I've got.  My Resurgance was still working great when I got a Black Widow Venom which did nothing on the condition I bowl on, then Twisted Fury which started out bad and now starting to hit good, just got a Black Widow Nasty which is doing pretty well.  For bowling one night a week and averaging 210, can't complain to much, I sub in two others and average over 200, until I bought a No Mercy, my first new ball in years, is when my average started to average started to go up.

I have an arsenal of about 10 in store, but bring 4+1 spare to league and training. If things run smooth I will only use 1 or two of them, I just like to have a fall-back option at hand, or to cover a wider potential range of lane conditions. I suppose that 2+1 spare would be enough in most cases...

I bring 3 plus a spare ball and normally use only 1 or 2 all night.

I bought a jig and drill bits in 2000-01 along with a bench top drill press for about $450 total.

On average I spend $85 or less on most bowling balls I get through ebay, bowlingball.com and on here.

Usually you can find a lot of great deals on bowling balls for $85 or less shipped to the house. I carry 5 to league, usually only need 3 but take 5 just incase. Try to take a variety.

My most recent buys all include shipping

new release Diamondback Pearl $90
Morich Levrg $60
Lev response $62
Ntense Levrg $60
Nsane Levrg  $60
Brunswick Swarm $60
Wild Thing   $75

Makes it easy to afford more then two bowling balls at those kinds of prices.

I purchase sixteen per year on the average. I take three -five depending on the league and house. And
six for tournaments.

I never walk into a center with fewer than six, but I rarely use more than three (two reactives plus a plastic spare) in any given night. It just might be a different three one night than the next.

For tournaments, I take seven or eight, and I probably will use them all if it's a long format.

It's a hobby, have fun with it. If people want to give you grief about having too much stuff, either laugh with them or flip them off, your choice, but keep doing what you're doing. It's really none of their business.

IAs you can tell from my signature i have a vast array of equipment. Many (Mega Friction & recovery, Break point and break) see very limited use, mainly tournaments. I normally take 6 to league plus a spare ball. Most times i leave the opiler i take and the toast ball in the car as i can go out and get them if needed. As i bowl in three different centers, all with different lane surfaces my core arsenal will vary slightly from center to center

I do get into jackpot's sometime, trouble is if I don't bowl a 268 or better in this league forget it,  I average 210, but the highest game is a 280 which didn't even win a jackpot, lost by 7 pins, I will say that the newere bowling balls have jumped my average up higher than I've ever been, but when the only 300 game that I've thrown was with an original Black Hammer back in 1985, it does get aggravating
