How many games to groove a change.
« on: October 31, 2006, 03:32:24 AM »
I made a recent trip to the Kegel training center. I am making several changes to my game and was wondering how many games it might take to groove a change.
I'm sure it depends on what kind of change is made. I plan on changing the following.

1. Back angle. I have been chasing the ball during my push away. This gets me to far forward and the ball actually passes below my knee. I have been making progress on this one. Now the ball passes the middle of my knee. I'm going to try to get a couple more inches higher.
Now if I can get my back angle to where I want it. How many games should I wait before starting on the next change ?
Just seems like every time I start on something else the previous change goes back to the old ways.

Would be nice if we could change everything all at once. Guess I have been bowling way to long for that.

I have always heard that it takes a 1000 times doing it the new way before it becomes a habit.

I major changes I’ve made to my game over the years I would say that is about right, a 100 games of doing it the new “way” and it will become your new habit.

The trick is to know that the changes we are trying to make are correct and not just something that feels good. Example---beginners hold the ball and release it the way they do because it feels good that way yet we know what they are doing is far from correct

LOL That's how all of my bad habits started. Something felt good at the time so I exaggerated the feeling. Next thing you know a bad habit is grooved. I hope Pinbuster is right and it takes only 100 games. Two years to make a change will kill me.

If one implements "one thing at a time" into a game, with concentrated practice sessions on that change.  Generally, would take 3-4 practice sessions and "X" about of time, depending on your emotional makeup, to get the "new" thing semi embedded into the game.  If more than one thing is added, all bets are off.  Complicates exponentially the learning, physical , and mental process. YMMV, everyone can be different.

A Bowling "Makeover" can be brutal exposing more weaknesses to the forefront or over exaggerating the strengths. After re-inventing my game 3-4 times, I will from now on try the "only one thing at a time" routine. Given time, seems to be less stressful and time is the great healer.
