swinging the ball high in your backswing
« on: March 14, 2004, 11:08:26 PM »
I see alot of people(more younger than older) having the ball positioned well over their head at the top of the backswing, but hardly ever see any pros do it(there is a couple exceptions).  Now my question is why?  It seems like it would cause alot of inconsistency and I have read alot of articles saying it's bad to force the ball back during your swing.  Is this just a bad habit that is easy to pick up or am I missing something?  For those of you who do this I am not trying to offend you or anything I am just curious.

my humble opinion on this....

as long as the armswing is free.....and not muscled......how high it goes is not that big a concern......

mine is slightly over my head....but the arm swing is free....so just let gravity and other physics factors do their thing...

I guess I am talking a little more extreme than I let on.  I see alot of people at head level or a little over but I am talking about alot of younger bowlers looking like they are almost forcing the ball way back in their swing.  I thought maybe that is the method alot of teachers are using now or something...

Ice...

on that page of links...

check out Drew Hylen video......

free armswing......ball starts at waist......up to his head in the backswing....but swing is very free...not muscled.....

talked with Carol Norman about this as my backswing is slightly above shoulder height.......but armswing is predominatly free......

could be a couple of things that affect this.......ball weight....*spinner tends to use much less weighted ball...).....strength of pushaway....and such....

again just humble opinion...

I have found mine going a little bit higher lately but thats because I'm relaxing my arm more now that I've had some coaching and I'm getting my timing right. It took my coach several times of walking next to me as I did my approach shouting for me to relax my arm before it sunk in that you have to have a TRUE free swing for accuracy and power . But it never gets past my head in the backswing . I see one guy where I bowl who has he's arm nearly vertical in his backswing it always makes me grin.

I noticed that my backswings are high also..but ONLY on my spares..But maybe thats because my spare ball is significantly lightetr than my strike ball?

in reply to ieq's post, if you notice, many people bend over much more in there backswing than when they start out. i dont know if this has anything to do with it, but it might. i am one of the people that has a low backswing, below shoulder level, so i really cant comment on your question. people have commented i have to small of a backswing and that i must muscle it, but i know that i do not even touch the ball and ieq's comments make sense to my swing, i start off at hip level on my pushaway. Also, energy is sometimes transfered to the ball in the push-away, and that might be somewhat of an explanation.

I would like to point out that having a HIGH backswing requires that the shoudlers open up. Which then requires the shoulders closing. This opening and closing severly impacts the ability to be accurate. If you look at anyone of these bowlers, ie. PDW for example, as they go down the approach, there shoulders are squarely facing the wall (90 degrees to the foul line). This is to allow the shoulder joint to open up so that the swing can get higher.

If you can master this technique more power to you. I could not. I personally dont see the benefit gained.
