Help! I want to DECREASE revs
« on: March 14, 2004, 05:15:05 AM »
I want to learn to decrease my revolutions. I was thinking about purchasing a wrist brace to help with my problem.  Has anyone tried this??  Can you offer me better advice??

I have spent the last year learning to bowl on oil.  This year every tourney I hit the shot blows up after 4 games.  Help me!

Hey Andrew,

Bob7 suggestions are good, I however break my wrist and let the ball weight take me all the way thru the swing but lift on the fingers at the point of release for feel purposes.  Either way, the key is not to have a lot of wrist action.  Imagine a throwing a baseball, if you keep your wrist broken thru the entire motion, you can't or it becomes very difficult to put a lot rotation on the ball.  Well, this has the same effect in bowling, just doing it upside down bud.  Hope this helps...

Edit: Sorry, didn't answer your question.  Yes, I feel a wrist brace will also help.  One of my students who turns the ball fairly well(425-450), he tried a Columbia leather glove similar to the Robby Original and this helped cut down his revs but it all goes back to what Bob and I were saying about wrist action.  This glove or any glove that will restrict your wrist from snapping thru the ball will help you reduce revolutions, thanks.

Hey Andrew,

I agree and disagree with Bones, if you have a weak wrist to begin with and you cannot create revolutions, then a wrist brace will give you more but if you already have a fair to high amount of revs(C. Barnes), then it works the other way.  The wrist brace serves as a happy medium, if you're already beyond it, it'll pull you back, if you're on the other end of the spectrum and don't have revs, then it'll increase it.  From my personal experience, it may be difficult for a strong tweener who's able to "normally snap the ball" to just completely break their wrist and throw nothing, too drastic in feel.

A couple of my buddies also broke a Robby's glove because they couldn't stop snapping their wrist.  You may want to look into a stronger glove like the Col Wrist Glove w/ a flat piece of metal in the back only(Master also has a similar one).  This glove has no metal or strap in the palm so it does allow for better feel and various releases to occur at the release point.  The feel from hand to ball is just like wearing a Ebonite React/R glove.  Hope this helps...

I gotta agree with tenpins on this. I used to wear a brace because of wrist problems, and I thought I was doing good as to how many revs I put on the ball, well, my wrist healed, and I lost the brace only to find out I tend to be more of a cranker and put a faaaiirr amount of and on the ball (at least i think its a fair amount) so yes, a brace will most deffinitly cut down revs, but also cut down how many wrist positions you have to choose from.

Thanks for the advice guys.  I currently cup my wrist and keep it that way through the entire swing.  I can straighten my wrist out flat but I normally start to have big carry issues with that.

I have never tried a wrist brace and really don't want to.  I am so depressed with my performance this weekend that I am willing to try anything.

I feel like I am in Tweener Hell.  I have too many revs to play in the blown up track and not enough to play in around 30 and out.  I was able to play in the track area with my urethane ball but it was still flying.  I shot 191 with my basketball the last game.  I had given up at that point.

Andrew,

Is this situation some kind of mental reaction to that great 800 series you shot a short time ago? Are you over-thinking your current play? I've been in a similar situation for about a year and a half, but for a different reason. It can be hard to cut down your hook (not necessarily your revs) to make your ball path more suitable to the oil pattern, as you read it.

I've been using a glove (a Mongoose Equalizer) for several reasons: it keeps your wrist straight (which should help you a little), and it has nothing in the palm except a thin strap; so it is usable without a span change. It also has the metal support only in the back. Another positive is that stops you from making subconscious changes in the midst of your swing, something many of us do and not always being a positive thing. The last good thing that I like is that it makes very easy to have a cleaner thumb release because it keeps your wrist straight, reducing the amount of muscle you have to use; this allows you to focus more on other matters, and gives you easier and more controlled revs.

One other suggestion I can make to helps reduce your revs is to move your fingers from a 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00 position (as a righty) to a 5:00 or 6:00 starting position. That is, cock your wrist less. You do have to be consistent with this and it takes practice to line up correctly for good carry power.

if you have access to the last issue of "bowling this month" magazine, mo pinel answers that question with a change in ball layout, if you're interested.

I goofed around tonight with different hand positions.  I just need to practice with them and get more consistant using them.

This is the first year I have hit the scratch tourneys hard.  I haven't cashed yet but I have learned a flaw in my game in every single one of them.  I was pulling my head up and not watching my target.  Now, I know i need to learn to fluff it.
