How many of you plan to get ...
« on: August 26, 2004, 03:13:00 AM »
(assuming you have a child/children) involved in bowling.  Do you like evolution of the sport enough to train them?  If not, what aspect of bowling do you feel warrants you to decide against competitive bowling?

Edited:  What would you teach them differently now as opposed to when you learned?

Vernon

I'm childless (hopefully that will soon change) but I would like to see my future daughter or son bowl.

Both my kids came thru junior programs.  My son doesn't bowl in adult leagues as of yet....he's 23.  My daughter.... 26 bowls on a 5 lady team.  Enjoys it and got good training in the junior ranks.  It really depends on the program and who runs it.  As in all junior programs some can be great others not so good.

At the time, I was a USTBF Bronze Level certified coach.  That helped a lot with the ability to get good teaching materials from Fred Borden and USTBF.

My pet peeve is from the parents that dump their kids off at a bowling center and use the program as a Sat. morning cheap baby sitting service.  Their kids hated it as we did as coaches trying to work with them and help them not only as young bowlers but as being good citizens.

It's an eye opener to walk into some bowling centers with a junior program whether after school or Sat. morning and watch what's going on.  It's a reflection of society in general.

I have two children, age 14 (she's a 140 average) and almost 10, and he just broke the 100 average barrier for the first time this summer

I coach on their youth league on Saturday but I personally don't coach them because a) I'm Mom and they don't listen and b) they have their own personal favorite coaches who help them out.

I have two sons and two stepsons. The oldest is 32, the youngest is 16. Although none of them bowl seriously at this point, they all went through juniors, and all have pretty good fundamentals.
I expect that a couple of them will pick it up at some point in their lives.

No - I wouldn't do anything differently now if it were my grandchildren. (and I don't have any of those, yet.)

I have a daughter that is 10 and this was her first summer league bowling with me this year. Much like what happens with other moms and dads, she thinks my coaching is not necessary as she tunes me out when she bowls and would rather do her own thing. Sometimes she tries to replicate my bowling form and release and has a hard time with it, which shows me she wants to learn more. She averaged 98 for her first summer bowling, and I think I will continue next summer with her. I am getting certified as a youth coach next month so maybe that will convince her to try the Saturday morning youth program...

I would train my daughter the same way my father trained me- working on spare accuracy, a good release and plan for the ability to play different parts of the lane. The latter point I learned from my college coach.
