how many of you?
« on: May 10, 2015, 12:55:44 AM »
How many of you actually use a "light oil ball?" When I refer to light oil, I mean the tropical breezes, the screams/shots, apex ect. I just never seen anyone actually use these light oil balls anymore.

The lightest oil ball I use is the vintage lt-48. I am in the chicagoland area and we actually use oil. I couldn't imagine using a tropical breeze unless I wanted to shoot 10 pins with it all night.

I've been throwing my Ride almost nonstop since I got it. Breezes are really popular at our house for people with slower ball speed.

Our shot has a decent amount of oil. Not a lot, but it's there. We just have a lot of friction and getting a ball to hook on our 41 ft house shot isnt hard

I have a Hammer Viral and a Hammer Black/Blue. Love both of them and they are awesome on lighter oil conditions. My wife has a Roto Grip Scream and she can use it only on lighter conditions. It can almost be considered a spare ball when there is oil on the lanes.

I don't really own a modern light oil ball, but a few weeks ago I used a Blue Hot Flame on Cheetah.  It was a light oil ball many years ago.  Today it's not much stronger than my XXXL.  It either lost something over the years or today's oils are a lot heavier or more viscous.  I remember it hooking a decent amount on a lighter house shot and now it barely moves.

I bowl a second shift league, so my Strike King gets regular use.  Occasionally I even pull my Avalanche Pearl Urethane out of the depths of the locker.  It usually saves the night when they're really toasted.

I think it depends on what you're shooting on whether league or tournament. This year alone, I've gone to my Brunswick Slingshot (pin-down), Brunswick Avalanche solid (pin-up), and Columbia Black U-dot in various tournament gigs I've participated. (I don't bowl in any leagues.) The earliest I've gone to any of these pieces was game No. 4 out of seven or eight games bowled.

I just had a TAG drilled a week ago. It is rated for light oil, but has shown it will work on more than light oil.

Shout works wonders.  It almost doesn't make the light oil ball list In my opinion, but I never see anything so light that I need anything less than a shout.

The Cobalt Vibe and Blue Hammer are integral parts of my arsenal.  I think the trend is more and more to so called light oil balls as younger players learn that a more direct angle to the pocket actually enhances carry compared to going coast to coast

The only other people I see throwing light oil equipment in my area are beginning bowlers or elderly bowlers without any ball speed. Everyone else seems to throw upper mid level equipment at a minimum. And a few of them complain about how dry the shot is

19 MPH Cranker here, Tropical Breeze is my go to ball for almost any shot. Hitting 16 at the line, 7-8 at the arrows, and 5 at the break point. I also roll an old school Blue Hammer and a Motiv Tank, been known to throw my Ice on short sport patterns. If you have enough hand you don't need aggressive gear to strike. I can hook the whole lane but rarely find a need for it.

I drill a strong ball weak, and change hand positions. No need for a "dry lane ball"

For the last several years (since 2004/5), I've used entry level/light oil balls majority of the time for most of my leagues. Scout, sonic x, jazz, Tropical, slingshot, breeze (x2), misfit (with UFO), and now, Crucial 50-60% of the time. Speed 16.5, <300 revs, low tilt 65-75 rotation, and bowling on medium length light volume. 1st and 2nd shift leagues...
