How many re-drills are too many?
« on: May 15, 2007, 01:05:49 PM »
I got a ball drilled, and re-drilled.  It reacts well, but it rolls over the holes now.  Would a 3rd drill be too many?

Just know that with every redrill, you're changing the dynamics of the ball.

I'll never throw a plugged ball in tournament or league play.  Strictly practice only.

Well, I have seen balls with 4 plug jobs on it which would still perform well, and I had a ball I used on 3rd drill - I did not expect much, but the ball turned out to be a great success.

Two things to mind about plugged balls: once the dynamics - any plugged hole will alter the ball's static weights through different densities, especially with deep holes that touch the core. Flare potential could be affected, too. Nevertheless, a pro shop should be able to determine the statics to find a proper setup.
Then there is the poetnatial problem of plug material in the track area. It does not offer much friction and my protrude from the surface if it is not even. This might affect ball traction and predictability, especially if you have several plugged holes in the track and you have resurfaced the ball after plugging (the plug material is normally harder than the coverstock's resin and does not sand away evenly).

Okay.  I will just keep the layout as is, and work on a different release for that ball.

depends on how many holes are drilled into the core.Plug is close enough to shell and filler but not nearly as dense as core material.

I try and keep the plug off my track if possible. But if the ball rolls well, I could care less how many times it's been plugged.

Good spare ball.

why? If a ball works who cares if its plugged or not. It depends where the plugs are and what drilling your using, but three seems to be pushing it to me.

Actually, the PBA does.

After looking up the rules on equipment last year, if you're going to bowl a national event, you are not allowed to have fully plugged holes whatsoever.  The only plug that can be used is clear plug, and only a certain amount can be visible on the ball (only for pitch changes).

I got further proof of this as I watched Joe Chiccone fix his bridge with super glue and drill shavings.  Since it wasn't plug, he could do it.

ryan shafer used this ball on TV in 2006. that is more than pitch changes.

Shafer's ball I'm pretty sure is using 3 finger slugs, and not ball plug. Looks like he drilled the fingers bigger and put the first 2 in and then drilled out the middle for the center one.
