It boils down to practice. I used to think it was necessary to have a plastic ball for the 10 pin spare (right handed), but after a league seeing Purvis Granger pick up spare by just flattening the hand. I converted. Was finally convinced me was seeing other people using spare balls and still have a poor conversion average when it comes to picking the 10 pin/7 pin. On a good night, I usually pick up the all my corner pins, on a bad I might go down to 60 percent. Due to lack of practice. Which is about the same when I was using plastics for corner.
So use or don't use is up to you. Practice however is required. By the way, the change in your sparing average is probably to a small change in your delivery. It helps a lot if you can have someone knowledgeable observe you bowl.
