How many solid black balls are ...
« on: November 17, 2009, 10:31:48 AM »
currently being sold?

I know of
- Motiv SX-1
- Storm Natural
- AMF Hype Urethane
- Columbia Full Swing

I do not believe the Hammer Onyx Vibe is solid black.

Is the Elite Black Label a solid black ball?

Neither the Black Widow nor the BW Bite are solid black balls, though.

Never heard of any with white in them before. Interesting.

It is sold/marketed as an all black ball.

While the Black Widow does technically have red swirls in it...some of them had VERY little red and looked almost black.  Ofcourse some had HUGE amount of red, but they really didn't typically show a bunch of red so I might call it a black ball.

Ask Brian Voss!

I had an SD73 Classic which had gold logos which i filled in black. I reckon with a balance hole that ball might have a differential near 0.080, but you can't see it working down the lane, it just makes this almighty swoop towards the pocket out of nowhere, very impressive.

Do we prefer a completely black ball?

AS I already stated, I am only curious. I recently purchased a HYpe urethane and while I don't often like some of the more exaggerated colors (Intense Inferno, New Breeds, etc), I find the all black ball to almost lack a visual personality. I guess I've gotten used to some beautiful, phased color patterns: reds, silvers, greens, and multi-blues. Some of these balls are just so beautiful to look at.

On the flip side, I often do best with the ugliest balls.

I don't want to get into any arguments or discussions. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all. I wondered how many black balls were currently available. I also wonder how many of them will sit there, unbought, solely because people don't like the way they look. That's a question that may never be answered.  Color has nothing to do with my ball choices, personally. Like most bowlers, a good ball is one that performs in the niche I need filled.

I do admit that there are balls I could just put on display only to admire.
