It's all feel. You can feel if you hit the ball to much and that's what made it hook too much or vice versa with missing the ball at the bottom. You can make a better judgement on moves this way. With grips you just don't get the same fell on your finger tips, for the most part every shot with grips feels the same. Also, for myself, grips tare up my fingers, so that's one reason for me as well.

I don't agree that you get no feel with grips.  IMO many, if not most pros, don't use grips as a cost saver.

I haven't used grips since 98, and never looked back. Went no inserts with bevel until 03, when I saw some very high level guys in the area going with no bevel in the fingers. Thought I would tear my fingers up, but tried it. Bowled a 8 game tournament after changing 2 balls, with no pain, and great feel. No one can throw my stuff because I keep them as sharp as off the drill press. Only time they get any bevel is when I resurface or change.the.cover on a ball, and that's just because of the sanding process.

I don't care for finger grips at all since they always tended to cause my fingers to tear up a lot more.  Going without grips, I like that I can feel if I'm hitting up on the ball too much.   The only grip I use is a hard plastic thumb slug to have a consistant feel.

I went away from inserts in 2001ish

To me I get a more consistent feel from ball to ball that I didn't get with inserts. It shouldn't be painful if the holes are drilled to fit your finger size and are beveled/sanded to smooth the edges. I'd never go back to inserts. Plus it save money on buying and replacing them.

Additional side note, I've only had two bowling balls crack since I went away from inserts in 2001 vs 1 in 4 prior to. I have drilled a lot of bowling balls. My brother still uses inserts and would say about 1 in 4 or 5 still start to crack from the fingers out.
