Can anyone recommend a good way of keeping wooden approaches clean? I appreciate that from time to time, people will tread things onto them, but does anyone know a good way of keeping them in a good condition with a fair degree of slide?

The best way I believe is in the centers hands. Many centers just don't pay attention to what goes on in the pits. I have seen everything from bowlers in flip flops, tennis shoes, no shoes to using all kinds of powders on the approaches. Baby powder, too much easy slide, cigarette ashes are all dangerous and to some degree foul up the approaches for other bowlers. My attitude is the no shirt no shoes no service attitude. If someone doesn't have the proper attire including bowling shoes they should not be allowed to bowl. Also using substances on the bottom of their shoes they should be warned then ejected if it continued. Bad approaches are very dangerous. It's easier to keep something clean if it's not getting dirty in the first place. If the approaches are in normal shape a dust mop and occasional spray should keep them clean.
