How much does your thumb come out??
« on: May 14, 2009, 08:23:04 AM »
During your swing home much does your thumb move from a seated position??  I put my thumb in completely seated at the start but I think it slips out 1/4 to 1/2 inch before the angle will allow it to catch and hold and not fall completely off my thumb..

Also.. I see many pros , I think Mallot does this,  Slipping there thumb in and out in the process of there approach and push away.. Do some pros not put there thumb in all the way and just start with the thumb out a little and already caught..

I'm caught in between doing things(grip span and pitches) the right way or the way they should be done vs what feels good and what works.. I'm sure there is a happy medium somewhere..

My thumb stays in the entire time until release.  Relaxed and everything so that it freely comes off my hand at release.  Wes does that little thumb slide in his pushaway, I assume, to make sure his thumb is fully relaxed prior to swinging the ball.  Kind of in the same way most batters wiggle the bat or have some movement or twitch prior to the pitch being throw.  Your thumb should not be sliding out during your swing.  This probably means that your thumb hole is too loose, and also possible that you have too much reverse pitch in your thumb.

I talked about this in another post but I did have a stretched span , over 5 1/4" with 5/8 of reverse.. I went to a more relaxed span of 4 7/8 with 3/8 reverse.. I tried more forward and could not get out of the ball.  I do have a a longer thumb (just over 2.5 ")so maybe that is why I need the reverse to get out of the ball..My thumbhole is pretty snug.. I use a piece of velcro on the backside for a magic carpet sort of feel..

currently with tape and velco or without anything in the thumbhole I can put my hand in the ball and let the ball dangle by my side with out any grip pressure and the ball will not fall off my hand.. the thumb will slip out a bit until it catches the angle and webbing for it to hold on..

In my opinion the thunb hole swhould not move down and when you hold the ball by your side completely relaxed the ball should not slip at all. You could have someone beat on the top of the ball and it should not slide on your thumb. As soon as you bring the ball up to your push away position the ball should roll off of your hand with ease.

I'm alittle confused as to what you are saying.. when and how should the ball come off your thumb and hand ??
