How Much Equipment Is Too Much Equipment???
« on: April 29, 2004, 12:28:53 AM »
When it comes to bowling equipment, I feel sort of like a pack-rat.  Although I sell and trade a lot, I always seem to have around 6 to 20 balls in my possession at one time (currently have 11 drilled and 2 or 3 undrilled).  Its not that I dislike any of the equipment (otherwise I would have sold/traded it long ago), but realistically I only use the equipment in some practice sessions, a few leagues, and a couple of tournaments.  And most of the time (unless extreme conditions are met), I use the same equipment.  With this relatively small amount of bowling I do (by no means do I throw the huge number of games of pro's or regional players - probably 10 to 15 games a week), I always wonder why I keep some much equipment around.  I'm not sure I have never "worn-out" a ball before, never throwing more than 50 - 60 games with any ball.  Now that I'm thinking about it, by the time I get tired of a ball and move on to something else I have drilled, there most definitely will be a new release that I would rather own.  So my question is, how many balls at any one time should any non-professional bowler have?  Maybe 5 or 6 to cover just about any condition a person would run into?  How many balls does everyone out there own?  Of those, how many do you throw on a regular basis?  Can a person have too much equipment?

I've seen a 180 league average bowler bring 11 balls to a three game sweeper.  That was the absolute worst.

And when that one car is a Chevy Tahoe, there is NO DOUBT you have too much equipment.

I just finished gathering up my stuff, getting ready for a road trip. I need to figure out which balls are coming with me. Fortunately, they are going to relocate from the Tahoe to a Chevy Silverado 3/4 ton...
Anyway - they FILL the cargo area behind the back seat, and there are still 5 balls on the back seat. That's WAY too much equipment. 23 balls, to be exact.

And you know you have too much when there are 3 of them that YOU HAVEN'T EVEN THROWN YET!!!

I gotta get a life!

I think you have too many...

when you have to make more than 2 trips to the car to bring them in.

It is possibly to have too many, when you have to think which SMOOTH arcing pearl piece to throw on sport.

I think I am down to 11 or 12.  I am trying desperately to get rid of these things.  I have resorted to giving them away.

So between the wife and I, the number is 17.

I just bought the wife a new Hammer too.  Oh well...

I bought a Super Carbide Bomb over a month ago.  I haven't even glued the finger inserts in yet.  I haven't thrown my HPD, HPH, Bruiser, Werewolf, Sonic X, or Danger Zone in months.

Throughout the last year or so I have probably bought and sold 40-50 balls. I currently only have a couple that I don't throw. Total right now is probably 18. They are all in the pro shop. I have a ball rack on my backporch that is enclosed, the rack holds 18 balls. There is only 4 on there now since I have gotten rid of all of my extras.

I realized that I could have too many bowling balls when I actually thought about building a ball rack in the trunk of my car. It was going to hold 12 bowling balls, 6 each layer and be right up against the back of the car seat. FUNNY thing is, I live in Ohio....winters are no good for bowling balls.

SERIOUSLY---I think it is possible to have too much equipment. You know when you are in this category when you do not know why you have each piece of equipment that you do. When you have your benchmark ball, and then go to your bag to fit the condition you are on, and end up confusing yourself.

I have a friend that says anything over 3 is too many.

Because while you're bowling you are often thinking if I only had that one over in the corner of the garage!

I agree with him completely.  I have 52!
