home made ball spinner?
« on: September 05, 2006, 01:33:45 AM »
Ok guys,
you're either gonna laugh or say hmm, not a bad idea.
I thinking about attempting to make a spinner using
a heavy duty grinder, mounted vertically and a reostat (sp)
for a speed control device.

Section 8, or worth trying?

Worth trying if the grinder has enough power and is cheap enough. Direct drive is hard on the bearings, balls can be up to 3 oz. out of balance. Don't know about the reostat, a two speed system should be sufficient.

Most people that have tried this have used washing machine motors off junked machines.  The effort and danger involved makes $200 look pretty cheap.  --  JohnP

I have some success with an electronic power drill - a heavy duty machine with more than 1 hp power, 2 speeds, adjustable torque etc.
I was lucky to find a vertical mount to put it on a sturdy work bench, and made a ball "cup" from scratch to mount it on top. With lowest speed and torque, this works pretty well, although you have to watch out for vibrations when the ball/core is placed out of center line. Tends to become wobbly, a table mounted spinner would be more stable. But for "household" sanding and polish once in a while, it is an option. Only drawback is that I have to keep one hand on the speed lever to keep the drill rotating, while the other hand is needed for the pad and to stabilize the ball a bit.

I just don't understand why some people think its worth the hours and effort in building your own. You risk also having the spinner vibrate or wobble and slinging the ball out of the cup. $200 for the 1/2hp Vertex would be the best bowling investment you could make. Oh well, to each his own.
