how much of a miss is a big miss?
« on: May 31, 2009, 06:59:11 AM »
I would like to know how many boards left or right at the arrows on sport conditions? I was wondering because I noticed I only miss like 1 or 1 1/2 boards left or right of my target at the most (meaning if I am targeting 17 if i miss at the most I will miss to 18.5 or 15.5) so a 3 inch accuracy pretty much so how big of a miss is a big miss?

On a sport pattern it really depends on how you are throwing and what pattern and what kind of ball and all that junk. I have been on sport patterns where I found a line where I had 4 boards of area. I have been on other patterns and lanes where if I missed by a board It was either on the head pin or missed completely. It doesn't have to be much to get you in trouble.

What constitutes a "big" miss depends on your trajectory AND the amount of recovery the condition allows.

An example would be like targeting a long range gun. Only a couple of degrees of in targeting and you miss the object by quite a bit.

If you are playing a very direct shot, a one board miss will still let the ball be close, even with limited recovery, while a one board miss on a big swing shot will result in a larger miss at the object, due to the initial trajectory and the lack of recovery.

A big miss really depends on the bowlers accuracy.  Some bowlers are aggravated if they miss by 1-1/2 to 2 boards either way.  While other bowlers play a general area (ive known bowlers who's goal based on where they are standing is just to get it between two arrows, and a miss for them is outside of that area).

So it's variable based on each person.  I myself like to keep it within 2 boards of my target area.  I also have a tendancy to miss left as opposed to dumping it right (timing issue with fast feet).

With the way I line myself up on sport conditions I am usually up the back of the ball more (it gives an earlier but less aggressive back end reaction that way), and I usually play as tight and straight as possible, at least to start.

If I tug it left 1-2 boards I am usually ok though I know it will check up early, but if I tug it more than that the results are usually bad

so on sport conditions with a 1.5 board miss zone left and right of my target I am in a good zone? it's just on a us open like condition (dead flat) I bowled on in early may I missed one board left of target and it left my a 3 6 spare by going through the nose?

it also depends where your break point is if your targeting 10th arrow getting it to about 5, but instead you pull it and it still hits 10 but maybe you hit 8 or 7 thats a huge difference, especially on sport shots.
