Title: How much of the approach do you use?
Post by: channel surfer on April 16, 2004, 12:40:27 AM
Personnaly, i dont use much of the approach at all. I take smaller steps, so my approach ends up being about 7 or 8 feet long. Is this bad?

also, How much do you use?

I have a natural four step approach and I start at the front set of dots, that way I don't end up releasing the ball four feet from the foul line like I did when I first tried bowling. I don't notice a lot of bowlers starting that far up. It seems like a lot of bowlers (men at least) start as far back as they can get.

I have a pretty short approach...I start about a foot and a half infront of the first set of dots, and i stop about 6 inches from the foul line...I have a short, quick, 4 step approach...

I start with my heels on the front set of dots. I end up about 9-12" behind the foul line.

if you take 5 steps, put your heel on the foul line and walk 5.5 normal steps. This is a good determining factor of a typical starting position. However, in your approach the first couple steps should be smaller, building in length the slide being the longest...but still taking up the same distance as in the above. With this said, timing is based on the amount of time your approach takes and the amount of time your armswing takes. A significantly shorter approach will require a slower than normal cadence or a reduction in armswing time to make up for the faster completed approach. The problem here is that when bowling well, it wont make a difference much. However, you will be susceptible you having troubles getting into time and maintaining good consistant timing. Remember the closer you can bowl to your natural abilities (ie. like walking) the easier things come and the easier things are repeatable.

Consequently if you are tall with long legs, the more approach you will naturally take. The shorter the less. The cadance should be as natural as walking. Focus on this and you will find you natural starting position the approach.

BowlingBabe -

In my house we do have a step-up.  A lot of guys do stand with their heels hanging over the edge.  Some of them do this rocking motion with their feet just before they start their first step.

I'm short so I stand with the front of my shoe about 3" in front of the dots closest to the foul line.

You have to be 6'7"+ to have to stand at the back of the approach.

I stand on top of the second set of dots closest to the foul line, and I'm a 4-stepper.

On this subject, on Pin-Chasers web site
Dick Ritger has a tip on the slide. He said
its important to set up so your slide ends at
the foul line, other wise you will stretch out
too much. Take a min. to read it.
 www.bowlingknowledge.com the other tips
are good also.

i start with my toes right at the closer set of dots and use a 5 step approach from there.  first 2 steps are real small, smooth steps.  end up right at the line, maybe just an inch away.
