How much surface is too much??
« on: February 04, 2009, 03:04:58 AM »
Unless I am on something like the Shark or really heavy oil, I have noticed that if I get any more surface than 2000 my carry will just go right out the window. I was wondering if the rest of you have that point where if you go any more surface it is overkill??

For me, I don't know if it is really roll out or not. I will leave even more ringing 10's than flat 10's. It just never seems to get that right angle into the pocket.

it depends on what i am bowling on. I use 1000 and 500 at times and not just on long heavy oil. i like surface on short also. gets the ball into a roll. the key is to play the lanes straighter than you usually would with less surface because you ball is going to use all its energy to cover the same boards. so if you use some surface move a little right and have the ball save some of its energy for the pins if that makes sense. I use that a lot for college as well as regional tournys

If your ball goes 20ft, hooks then rolls out..you have too much surface!!

Or you're bowling in the wrong house.

It depends on the ball I got a purple sumo that came stock with 240-260 grit and it rolls wonderfully however my gravity shift at that wouldnt go 2 feet down the lane before burning up. SO I think its a case to case sort of deal.

I have gone to 400 finish when the backends are flying and has helped.
when I was surfacing 1000 plus it was unpredicktable.

If the ball rolls out fairly consistently you have the choice of moving to a different part of the lane, or you can change the surface.

Every bowler will be somewhat different due to several factors.

it depends upon the lane surface and the amount of oil you bowl on. i've used a brunswick bvp mammoth wetsanded 220 grit on the cheetah pattern on new brunswick proanvilane synthetic lanes. i've also used my brunswick avalanche pearl 4,000 abralon with several coats of rubbing compound and several coats of polish on older wood lanes. it all depends upon the lane surface and the amount of oil you're bowling on.

Random question about surfaces.  On dry, is it better to use more or less surface plus polish, or even no polish?  The reason I ask is because polish and less surface is more responsive or jerky off dry if I'm not mistaken.  If there's little to no oil to get a ball down the lane, wouldn't less surface make the ball read dry more violently?

Less oil needs less surface ala 4000.  Different polish's will give different reactions but they all typically delay the reaction down lane.
