How much to you guys practice a week?
« on: May 04, 2010, 02:53:32 PM »
Just wondering what is normal and what is overkill..  I bought an unlimited pass for the summer that goes from may 1st to labor day ( sept 4th i believe ) for $89. Talked to my pro shop guy to find out when he oils and when the best times to come in will be , for fresh lanes. At the moment Im going about 2-3 times a week bowling 10-15 games per visit.. Too much? Average? And how much do you all get out/?

# of games to me is how i am feeling. The best thing you can do and i dont care what anyone else says is practice what you are not good at.  For me i have so much bounce with the THS is when i get on a heavier condition here i need to square up i suffer for too long and by the time i am done say for instance Team Event at Nationals i shoot 580 and leave 50 to 70 pins on the table because of my swing. Prctice your short falls and you will go a long way and be able to adjust on the fly.  Kevin

I"m sorry but since when does the proshop guy oils the lanes? isn't the mechanics does it?

Anyways the pros does like 10x more than that. i hardly practice but i'm not a good bowler. i just practice if i feel like practicing hahahaha.

I envy you guys, I need all the practice I can get  Just couldnt pass up a deal for $89 for unlimited bowling anytime over the next 4 months.. Heck, Ive already got 25 games on the card in the first 4 days Ive had it and at 3.25 per game its near  already paid for itself..

AS far as the "pro shop guy " Hes the Manager, mechanic, coach  and driller.. He is a bowling freak, and works open to close 5-6 days a week..

During the summer months I go twice a week. I work at the alley so I am able to put out any pattern I want. Rule of thumb for me is summer months no ths. Usually I bowl three or four games and then my buddy and I try and leave different spare combo's for the other to pick up. So about 6 to 9 games a week for me.

You can practice as much as your body will allow you to. If you become fatigued what is the use of practice something wrong. I never keep score and I dont practice on house shots (unless I have no choice) and if I have to sometimes I will just shoot spares for an hour.

Depends on my schedule, if a tournament is coming up I typically run a mini camp, unless I feel I need a break during a long stretch of tournaments. My mini-camp usually consists of 10-20 games a day on a sport pattern working on various things depending on what I know about the tournament and venue I will be bowling in. During this time I attempt to mirror what I will be bowling on and attempt to set up my arsenal for that shot, but always remembering to have equipment ready for the opposite extremes if I'm not familiar with the house and how a pattern typically plays or breaks down there.

As far as the unlimited pass, even if the lanes aren't fresh, it's always good to get in there with a spare ball and just get extremely confident that when it matters you can go straight at your spares. You can even bowl for score with the white dot as there should be enough friction present that you can use your spare ball, but still be punished for poor shot making.

I don't practice nearly as much as I want during the summer... no practice at all right now, no league either, but once tournaments start to roll in around mid-summer I will probably get out a few times... but usually only once a week.

I practice more when I know something is wrong in my game (footwork, arm swing, whatever).  I'll work through my kinks and hopefully be prepped for league/tournaments.

If I'm feeling good about my game, I try to practice on difficult patterns.  I know a few alleys that put down crazy shots for me, but in the instance I can't get that I'll bowl on lanes that are destroyed from open bowling.  Take my plastic and just try to repeat a shot over and over.

If you're practicing for score, don't bowl any more than 6 games.  And on your last game of the session, play Low Ball.

Some good little practice pointers in here  For me , I always like to keep score, ( it just lets me see my consistency )  for a MAXIMUM of 10 games, usually its 6-8, because with 2 of us alternating lanes after we are both done with 10 games each, things have changed quite a bit, So Then we start moving marks and seeing what works as the lanes progressively break down.. Thats a HUGE help , to me at least, learning what my ball does with drier mid lanes, carry down, and over all lack of oil..

When I got the card on saturday I rolled 10 games all with my T zone since the conditions were so dry I was easily able to move it 10 boards without an issue and held a 185 avg,  sad thing is its not far off the 202 i have now lol

Yea I Just got back home ( Minnesota ) from san antonio, and Ill be here for the summer for a few jobs, but its dead..  Biggest league up here is the 2 barely bowler leagues ( music, black lights, and alot of drinking ) and that only takes up 10-12 lanes or so

You got a great deal on that practice deal. When I was about 11-13 years old they had a "All You Can Bowl League". Bowl in the league and get all the free practice you want. If it wasn't for that there is no way I would be where I am right now with my game. Just always try to work on something everytime you go. Repeating bad habits isn't going to help you, but working on them and improving will make you a better bowler.

Exactly the reason Im almost liking the burnt up lanes now.. Because I can stop going for strikes and score and work on form and release..

Doesnt matter how much a person practices. My 3 Game practice routine is probably better then your 10-12 games a day.

Its not about how much but about what you do. I honestly dont believe you can coach yourself on your release of form you need a camera and/or a coach for that.
