How much to you guys practice a week?
« on: May 04, 2010, 02:53:32 PM »
Just wondering what is normal and what is overkill..  I bought an unlimited pass for the summer that goes from may 1st to labor day ( sept 4th i believe ) for $89. Talked to my pro shop guy to find out when he oils and when the best times to come in will be , for fresh lanes. At the moment Im going about 2-3 times a week bowling 10-15 games per visit.. Too much? Average? And how much do you all get out/?

RotoStorm, do you want an award for the best practice bowler or something? I dont understand how you can say you're practice sessions are better than others when you dont know these people.

Becuase most people think "practice" is bowling games out side of league. Practice is working on spares. Hitting marks and all the fundamentals. Its amazing how many people say "I have this many 300s in practice." thats not practice thats just bowlin.

And yes I would like an award for best practice sessions.

People who say they have "this many" 300's in practice tend to not have many meaningful ones or they would be talking about those instead.

I will get right on getting you that award. It's about time that practicing correct gets the recognition it deserves.

Practice makes perfect. House shot practice isnt really practice though. Got to find sport conditions

Doesnt matter how much a person practices. My 3 Game practice routine is probably better then your 10-12 games a day.

Its not about how much but about what you do. I honestly dont believe you can coach yourself on your release of form you need a camera and/or a coach for that.

I have a camera, alot of video and am working with 2 of the best bowlers in the area. We dont have any usbc coaches, so I did the next best thing.. WE work 6 games on striking and 4-6 more on release, approach, slide, marks, and spares after we review the vids of the first couple games.. Works out pretty good actually.. Im very happy with averaging 202 through over 100 games so far after being out of the game for over 4 years, and having all new equiptment.. But like I said, I cant wait to get better.. Hardest part for me now is not rushing my downswing, and getting out of the old routine I had for 20 years of muscling the ball and bending my elbow just before the release.. Because it seems if I DONT bend my elbow just before I cant get any speed or revs on the ball

Lately with being as busy as I am in my shop I was practicing a lot less.  Now with freeing up my mornings more I'll work back up prolly 50+ games/week but I do a few things.  I practice alone as much as possible...I never keep score...and I always practice with a purpose.  Just how I am though everyone is different.

I am just a hobby bowler, but I try to keep up at least one training session per week, with 6 games or more. I'd like to play twice a week, but my busy job does not allow this - and it is a major reason why I do not make much progress. Especially my spare game would need more practice, but I have more or less to devote the few occasions to execution and adjustment trainings, and here and there some devoted spare game frames (*sigh*).

Our problem is that it gets pretty hot down here in the south of France during the summer and our manager is always trying to find ways to save money.  So to be able to save a few cents he doesn''t use the AC and doesn''t oil the lanes as often (maybe once a week and always on different days).  This makes it kind of difficult to find the motivation to go out and practice.  The motivation to go and practice in "normal" conditions is always there, even if I have to travel half an hour each way, but bowling when it''s too hot and with little to no oil for me is just counter productive.

Practicing a few games or many games depends a persons comfort zone. But hear this.

Comfort zones are a long and slow death to any hopes you have of reaching your potential. I don't care what kind of goal setting plan, or mental game worksheet you follow or how much you practice. Your internal setting for what you "believe" about your game is what calls the shots.

There are specific strategies for creating new settings on your inner game dial.Nothing complicated yet they are extremely powerful and effective. But hey, only you know how much you want to break out of your comfort zone.

I usually have a little time to practice on wednesdays before league(not the same lanes that the league is actually on).

The only other time is on my Friday league.  My team has been in dead last all year long so I just use that day to practice.

"Back in the day", I used to practice every chance I got. There was no set schedule, but every time I found an opportunity, I was at the center bowling.

There was also no set number of games. I just bowled until either the time, or the money, ran out. If I had to make a guess, I would say AT LEAST 30 games a week, and that was on top of the three leagues and travel league I bowled. I was averaging 218 with a Black Turbo, Black Hammer, and Pink Hammer and was about to turn pro when circumstances changed in my life which prevented that.

Sadly though, as time and life have caught up with me, I no longer practice very much, if ever. I still love the game, but just don't have the time, or ability, to put in a lot of games. Heck, right now I'm out totally with a knee problem and won't be back until I get that cleared up. When I had to quit, I was averaging 210 with no practice whatsoever.

How much is too much? There is no such thing.

If I had an unlimited pass I would practice every day eight to ten games a day. I would practice on things I need work on and try different things.  Plus, it's a great time to perfect your spare shooting.

I was doing eight games a day for awhile. It worked out to about forty games a week or so since I don't practice on weekends.  My game improved quite a bit and I believe a lot was due to muscle memory.  I read somewhere that it takes 1500 hours to develop it for whatever you are learning.

Bowling by yourself every day can be a bit boring.  I used to bowl with my buddy so it wasn't so bad.  Plus, the laneman would put Kegel patterns for us to practice on.  If your laneman could do that for you then you might bowl more than you anticipate.

I just got back into bowling maybe about 4-5 months ago. When I first picked up the ball again I was getting the lanes every chance I could maybe bowling 8-10 games trying to get my arm swing, release, back etc... but that really started to take a toll on my body and by the time I got around to league night I was exhausted and it hurt my average. I'm down to bowling 2 maybe 3 days a week with 3-5 games and by the time league night rolls around I'm good to go. Practice is def. needed and great but don't over do it.
