How much will a different finger pitch affect my release?
« on: January 30, 2006, 05:52:53 AM »
I ask this because my arsenal is right now being fitted with 1/2" reverse as opposed to my previous 1/4" reverse due to some finger pain.  The one thing that has been really holding me back in my game is an inconsistent release.  How big a difference could a different pitch make?  I have really felt recently that I'm doing everything else better than ever before, but my inconsistent release is leaving me mired in the same average range.  Can I expect a much different feel for a mere 1/4" difference??

Sounds to me all these layout, drilling, finger pitch, PAP questions you keep asking are NOT being dealt with correctly by your pro shop guy.  He should be able to answer all the questions you keep asking.  Something isn't right in Denmark if you keep having problems with equipment choices, layouts or pitches, etc.

My advice find a "great" driller and stick with him. Even if you think you are saving a few bucks on-line it ain't worth it.

He should know your PAP and have your balls laid out correctly and know your technique so you don't keep having issues.  ie. Smoking Inferno, etal.

I went to him today because I went out over the weekend to throw my new DT Sniper, probably threw about 7-8 games with it, and after a few games I noticed my ring finger was really starting to hurt right at the base of the nail.  I had also noticed for awhile that I have a pretty good sized callous on that finger as well, but this was the first time I really had any pain.  I had him put different grips in it than what I was using (from power lift ovals to just plain ovals) and initially thought it may have been due to that.  I also noticed a gouge on the backside of the grip that looked as if my nail was getting caught on release.  When I took a look at my Smokin, which was drilled by the same guy, I noticed the same gouge in the back of the hole.  I just hadn't noticed it as much with the Smokin' as I gave up on it fairly early due to not liking the reaction I was getting.  I think perhaps my finger pitches have always been a little off, but the larger power lift ovals were masking the problem.

As far as your comments, Scott, I was previously going to what many consider the best driller in my area.  The problem was that he was arrogant, I didn't really want to talk to him, and I also didn't seem to get the same service as other people that frequented his shop.  Besides that, his prices were outrageous, whether you bought the ball from him or brought a blank in.  The Sniper I did buy direct from the new guy I have drilling my equipment, and other than the ring finger problem it feels better than anything else I had previously.  Is figuring finger pitches maybe a "trial and error" type of thing??  I've never done what I heard others do, by constantly redrilling a ball with different pitches until I got one that felt right, how can you determine the proper finger pitch?

One last thing about drillers:

I have tried in the past to make a topic in the regional section to find a "great driller" in my area, but it seemed like everyone that answered in that topic had a different answer.  The other thing is I've tried just "asking around," and everyone seems to have their own favorite.  It's too bad there isn't a certification process, as there is for coaching.  I would certainly spend the money to get fitted by a "gold level" driller.

Tell ya what I would do and this year this is EXACTLY what I did.  I wanted to shorten my span and try more forward in my thumb along with shortening my span I changed finger pitches also.  I did this with an older Col. Piranha.  Completely replugged and redrilled to new specs.  Got it done and couldn't be happier.  This is what I would do take an old ball and get it right before you drill anything else.

To find a good driller in your area I'd keep asking around who the better bowlers go to.  Ask on here anybody on BR close to you?  Where do they go?

Well two of the guys that I respect on here are Rick Wunder and Gene Kanak  both did not post in your topic.  They both bowl ABT so they know a lot of bowlers and know the Chicago area.  I'd msg them or re-direct them to this post and see what they have to tell you.  Another one would be Duke Harding.  All of these members I litsed are older mature bowlers and should be able to give you some options.

The pitch is basically the angle of the hole drilled into the bowling ball.

If your nail is biting into the back of the grip, your span on that finger is too long.

Splend,

Call Lynn DeCamp at Samstown Casino, in Vegas, at 1800-897-8696; ask for the bowling proshop.  Lynn does not work Tues./Wed., and he used to drill out of Chicago, so I am sure that he may still have knowledge of drillers in that area.  Other than Doug Sterner, in New York, Lynn is the only other one I trust.

wanna help me out by explaining what a pitch is maybe? no one else would help.

Pitch does determine the angle at which the hole is drilled.  It is the distance that the center of the hole being drilled would be away from the center of the ball if the hole were extended that far.  Pitch direction is specified looking at the grip with the thumb hole down and the finger holes up.  Forward pitch for either the thumb or finger holes is toward the grip center and reverse is away from the grip center.  --  JohnP

Thanks for all the advice, guys, I'll find out later today how that new pitch works out for me.  Now that I kind of realize pitches are at least partially trial and error, I'm not so worried about finding a new driller.  I do like this guy I'm going to a lot, and he's giving me great service!
