For me, myself, not very picky at all. Like Tony says, You can use almost any pin and get the reaction that you are looking for.
For customers, a "little", more picky. Only because most people get worried when the layout looks odd at all.
The fit and surface is the most important thing. Layout helps a little, the people that are really helped by layout bowl for a living. People put too much emphasis on this stuff. If you make a crappy shot, all the magic layouts in the world can't help you, you still threw the ball crappy. If you make a good shot, it is gonna hit the pocket, even if it's a plain ole Power Groove or Scout Reactive. If you make a great shot, you can strike with a house ball.
I think that is 6 cents worth!!
