I had to cancel a ball I sold the other day because I was unable to locate the exact specs that the customer wanted. The problem was that it wsa a discontinued ball so finding it was more difficult than usual. The manufacturer didn't even have it in their warehouse.

So my question is... how adamant are you with your ball weight, top weight, pin distance requirements?

Me? I'm not at all. I don't bowl with asymmetrical cores so the MB is insignificant. My ball driller, Mike Austin, can make it do what I want it to do.

What about you?

I am more fussy with symmetrical core balls than the assymetrical ones. The core strength on those balls is such that I can drill just about anything to do what I want it to do. Generally I request 2-4" and 2-3.5 oz for specs.

Examples:

Predator Pursuit with a 5-1/2" pin...put pin above the bridge and cg right of the thumb, hit the box finish with some CLean N Sheen and it's a gem on the house pattern

Trauma ER with pin BETWEEN the CG and MC2...the Determinator sais the MC2 was right and the balance said the cg was right. not sure how it rnded up as such but it did...put the pin below the ring and the cg in the bridge and it all worked out fine.

As long as it's close, then I'm fine. I ordered an Erase It and I wanted a 1-2 inch pin with 3-3.5 top, it showed up at the pro shop with a 4.5" pin, so I sent it back. But as long as it's ABOUT what I'm looking for, then I trust my driller to get it to do what we want it to do.

Usually ask for:
3-5" pin
3.5+ TW

purchased a short pin ball & low TW for the first time and wasn't too bad, but the above works better for me.

I'm usually picky on pin length, usually ask for 3-4 inch pin, shorter if i plan on using pin under ring. only time i am picky on top weight is when drilling close to the axis, then I ask for under 3 ounces.

For both tw and pin have been on a kick of anywhere from 2-4. Has worked well for me.

It really depends on the reaction that I'm looking to get. I usually stick to the layouts on the drill sheets, which typically call for pins in the 1"-2" range or in the 3"-4" range. However, I can usually find a way to make a 2"-3" pin work for me.

Top weight is largely irrelevant to me, as I seldom if ever use an XH.

2-3 pin, less than 4 ounces of top.
I drill almost everything the same way, pin below ring, cg in the palm, so anything more than 3 inches is tough to work with.

hehe... yeah I got his Crisis. Still working on the X Factor. In your case I can understand. Shipping overseas is going to be pricey and take a while. You certainly should only do it if you get exactly what you're looking for.

This reminds me, I need to give the distributor a call. I might have to call Storm on this X Factor... Mister Picky!

Normally for most of my stuff, i want 3-4 inch pin, and atleast 3oz of top weight.

For the heavier hooking stuff, i like to have atleast a 3.5inch pin and 3.5top weight, so i can have several options for drillings. And to make sure the ball gets down the lane far enough.

My Reloaded has a 4.5inch pin lol but the pin,CG,rad is all inline. But i guess it depends on the ball i am ordering too.

I like either short pins with low top weight (under 2.5 ounces), or pins 2-4 and around 3 inches of top weight.

For me, myself, not very picky at all. Like Tony says, You can use almost any pin and get the reaction that you are looking for.

For customers, a "little", more picky. Only because most people get worried when the layout looks odd at all.

The fit and surface is the most important thing. Layout helps a little, the people that are really helped by layout bowl for a living. People put too much emphasis on this stuff. If you make a crappy shot, all the magic layouts in the world can't help you, you still threw the ball crappy. If you make a good shot, it is gonna hit the pocket, even if it's a plain ole Power Groove or Scout Reactive. If you make a great shot, you can strike with a house ball.

I think that is 6 cents worth!!
