This may/ may not affect the release of the ball.  Some people tend to hang up in the ball a bit, thus changing the rotation making you come around the top of the ball a bit.  I recently went through some changes in my span, and i like the feel of the shorter span.  It is much more relaxed for me, and for me it gives a more comfortable feel rather then being stretched.  Generally speaking it won't hurt you too much.  It may even make you feel more comfortable.

Tough to know, if you are stretched at longer span you may pick up revs by going to correct.

If you are comfortably relaxed and even shorter span makes it tougher to hold on to the ball and also makes it easier to come over the top.

I agree there is no way to know for sure without seeing your hand. There is one span that fits... and changing from that span will effect your release. As well, changing the pitches in your thumb whole will effect your release.

I think the geneneral rule is that based from your correct span:
Shorter grips tend to clear the thumb early and promotes more hand rotation.
Longer grips tend to delay the thumb and keep the hand behind the ball more.

I recently tried a very short grip... 4 1/8 and was loosing the ball at my ankle and was almost topping it. Where before I use 4 1/2 and was hitting up on the ball at release but was tracking up next ot my fingers and thumb. I made these changes as experiments only and dont advocate doing these extreme senerios.

I agree with the earlier posts from more experienced bowlers;however, If you want see what the feel is like when you have more or less finger in the ball try changing inserts.  The difference between the front and back of a lift is roughly 1/16 of an inch.  You might try turning the lift, front to back, so that you can shorten the span on either or both fingers.  This will
allow you to put more, or less, finger in the ball to see what that feels like - without having to plug and redrill.  I understand that this is not an option, if you don't use inserts.

It is easier to be accurate if the ball feels centered and balanced with equal tension in the fingers.  The middle finger is stronger and some experiments with the differences between finger spans may be necessary.  You might find that balanced tension in the fingers causes a need for some change in the thumb pitch.

Hope this helps.
