senior bowler need shelp
« on: January 27, 2016, 05:55:39 PM »
I have a team mate who is around 80 and he has lost a lot of his speed.Has lots of hand .So he struggles to use a reactive ball. so he will use urethane. His reactive ball has only a pancake block and it is sometimes good for one game. Before he switches. Then out comes the urethane followed by weak 10 pins or lanes that flip and flop around.
Question is. Is there a reactive ball that will give him the shape of a urethane ball?
Is there a layout to make a gentle  arc he wants to play down the boards in the track
We play in an old house with synthetic lanes and old pin setters  which spit cork from the ball lifts and grease all over the balls. A very hard place to bowl in.

Yes, there are some that can be drilled and surfaced to react closely to urethane.
Plus there are some hybrid urethanes which can bridge the gap between resin (reactive) and true urethane.

Since everything is relative to another, especially in bowling, what is the reactive and the urethane ball he is using now?

Well, there's many balls out there a lot more even and calm reacting than the Soul Pearl (I think it's called Soulmate) before going to a what is probably a very early rolling dull old urethane.

Depending on how much oil you are are bowling on, there are balls like
the Storm Tropical Breeze Hybrid, The Storm Ride, Lane Master Wasp and Tiger Wasp are all light to medium-light oil balls that roll fairly evenly. The Soulmate is a very flippy pearl by comparison. Roto-Grip Loco Solid is a polished mild solid that handles medium-light oil but is very controllable. The Arson Low Flare Pearl is also a very good control ball with urethane like reaction,

If he needs a stronger ball, many can be sanded to make them handle more oil and make them even more even reacting. There are many more older balls easily available on EBay that are even more even reacting.

If his speed is that slow,he probably needs a ball designed to handle medium-light oil to enable him to handle medium oil. He needs weaker balls to handle more oil.

FYI Most of the balls marketed today as urethane, except for the new Black Hammer, are really resin/urethane blends meant and designed to act more like urethane. I doubt if he needs or wants such a ball, but being rev dominant myself, I can strongly suggest the current new Blue Hammer; it rolls like a true urethane but has resin like hitting power. It is meant for light oil.

By the way, did anyone watch him bowl before "forcing" him to buy such a ball?? No shop in their right mind watching an old rev dominant, slow speed bowler, like you say he is, would recommend such a ball, if I interpret what you've said correctly..

Too bad the Blue Green Centaur is not available. Would fit the bill perfectly. I was lucky and got the last 14# Visionary had...and is a keeper.

I didn't want to torture the poster with all the good balls from the past that are mostly inaccessible anymore. Still using the BGC fairly regularly. Many such balls can often be found on EBay, but not the Centaur.

If 15 pounds isn't too heavy for him--at 80 it most likely is......there are 2 different Lane #1 Bullets on ebay right now...both used....very very mild in the backend and lots of length..slow speed wouldn't be a problem with that ball.

The new Black Hammer. It is all urethane but hits like a resin on shot low BLUME pattern or if the lanes are dry. Smooth arc but hits great.

like many older bowler as they get slower and still have a lot of hand they go down in ball weight to try to regain speed. This limit's the ball they can get.  On my other league I have a partner with mega hand and he throws a taboo spare ball ( plastic ) and he has two 300 games with the plastic last year. he can not even use urethane with success because the amount of oil put on the lanes. Every time I see people complain a bout easy house shots don't bowl where I bowl I am In Texas oil country and in the bowling centers little oil can be found. there is no wall of oil to bounce a ball off.
