how to deal with injury
« on: February 01, 2013, 11:32:40 PM »
soon to be 53 year old who somehow sprained my Achilles on my slide (left)foot.
Doc is saying no bowling for 2 months, I am in two leagues and after one week away I am already itching to take the air cast off and throw the ball.
Anyone else have this injury? and what can be done to strengthen an ankle.
I have 2 weeks more in the air cast, before I can start Physical therapy.

The absolute best thing to do, no matter your feelings, is to follow doctor's orders.

You will learn the necessary exercises from the therapist. Have some freaking patience, that is, if you really want to bowl the rest of your life. I know from personal experience, right now! I could not bowl all of November through January, THREE FULL MONTHS! You don't know impatience yet. I just completed a month of therapy for my hip. Still not fully recovered in strength which is my major problem right now. It's a slow process, more often than not, from a serious injury. I am continuing the exercises my therapist taught me.

I am 53 and have had surgery on both of my Achilles tendons. In the summer of 2010 I had surgery to repair tears on the right one and last March I had a complete rupture on the other one. Both surgeries I was out of work for 3 month's between healing time and physical therapy. Luckily I have a sit down computer job otherwise I would have been out of work longer. The first surgery took me about 6 month's before the stiffness went away and the one last March I am just getting to the point where I have full mobility again. I have learned with Achilles tendon injuries you don't want to take lightly so listen to your doctor.

Thanks for the advise, and I do intend to follow the doctors orders.
Just got back in to league bowling in the last five years, and really enjoy the time out with the guys, and am even close to getting the wife to join a couples league next year.
First time with an injury that has kept me out for any length of time, and with both teams in the thick of it, just wishing to be out there.

No injury that takes you away from the game is fun.  I've had my own with bicep tears.  A friend blew his achilles, had surgery, and then blew it again.  It is definitely better to just take the time off and watch from the sidelines until you're cleared.

What I used to do is still go down to the lanes when my team was competing, hang out and cheer.  We were able to maintain the camaraderie and stay connected during the time off.
